Who Remembers when your truck would do 70mph?

Ergo Leylands, AEC mercurys and mandators, all good for 70+ and not a pain in the aris for everyone else.

I wasnt being funny btw just interested, never knew it was bad for mpg and engine i must say.

You’re quite clueless really aren’t you? And I bet you think you’re a professional driver as well… :unamused:

God no, im far from professional, only been at it a couple of years, what do you expect?

God say it as you see it :open_mouth: bloke only enquired on some thing he was unsure off, which in my expeirience(alot more than a couple of years) saves alot of agro further down the road.

As for the OP, yes I do remember, MANs that run right round to the stop on the Tacho 80ish, F10 with high ratio diff mmm, slow to get rolling but christ would shift, and being left for dust by powerliner mercs, blimey those fruitex lads used to move.

I had this F16 with no limiter (after the original owner had it as in the pic)… it used to shift!

That was the same origanal owner of the F10 i mentioned above.

our place still has a merc 7.5t that will do 80 ,it’s a hell of an experience though especially going through potholes at J43 of the A1/M1 ,i’ve advised the gaffer that it would make a good attraction at Alton Towers ,scary as hell :grimacing:

My biggest worry about freewheeling down a hill is that if I need some brakes, I prefer having a full tank of air.

Surely if you lose all your air the brakes will come on anyway?

When I first got my clas 1 licence, 1994, I did agency work at the weekends. It was a way in and things are a bit slower at the weekend so it was a good time to learn, quickly. Anyway, I usualy found myself at the same company most weekends, who had a big fleet, even bigger now. I usualy ended up in a P113 or if I was lucky a P114 which I would get on the A14 and let sit on the limiter, while I checked my mirrors, congratulated myself on doing so well and for being so great and checked my mirrors alot. One Saturday I was given an old FL10 which I got on the A14 and let sit on the limiter. While I was congratulating myself for being such a great trucker I noticed that everyone else was going a bit slow. I had a quick check for plod and flashing on coming trucks but couldn’t see anything. I then noticed the rev counter up in the red! I quickly checked I was in top gear and at the same time I see the speedo can move no further :open_mouth: I was flying  It then dawned on me the age of the FL10 and that it had no limiter  I kept an eye on the speedo for the rest of the day but did enjoy passing everything on the back to the yard when I was empty. I had the same vehicle another day, but I was ready for it and congratulated myself alot on that occassion

I remember that sinking feeling when the pedal went flat to the floor, and yes I mean the Clayton Dewandre pedal

When I was a young nutter in 1978 I had a Volvo f88 and it would do what it said on the front grill…88!!!

One of the minibuses I drive still tops 70, got to watch the speed on the motorway. It’s funny as hell overtaking some twerp in his brand new shiny coach and there’s me in a 20 year old minibus streaming past them.

Ooops forgot about back then.

I remember the joy of bumping off an MK and rolling forwrd towards the towing truck trying to brake.

My current one still does

Thats brilliant lol!

In my younger day my then new P220 rigid for starglaze lincoln + drawbar did 80 odd with fuse 22 ? removed lol, never did that when I had the trailer attached tho, that would have probably been mental

First truck I ever went in was my old man’s FL6. The speedo went to 80mph and the rev counter to 3000rpm and he used to get both needles off the clock.

Imagine the fuel economy on that :grimacing:

Still used to get overtaken by F12s and Leylands though.

Would of got a bit more out of it if he pulled the hand throttle out
Edit . . was thinking of an F6 .Not as fast as my S plate Tm though.(16T 500 btw)

Every one I drove did whatever you wanted it to do. Saw the writing on the wall when I was given a series 2 FH though, I had to get a very computer literate man to assist me. Final nail in the coffin was digital tachographs, you wouldn’t believe how kosher I am now. Thank God i only do local stuff, sitting at 90k’s up and down the motorways all day would drive me to distraction.

The secret was not to show how fast you could go all the time. Sit there at 95 or so and you wouldn’t get looked at, give her a little squirt to keep the traffic flowing and everybody had a nicer day. Of course at night, you could pile it on a bit but that’s why we had CB’s and knew not to take liberties.

The golden rule for those still into it: Always be second fastest.

i was a speed limiter fitter many years a go for a one transport Leeds,i was fitting them 3 a day, drivers avoided me like the plague  but when i had to drive when the workshop shut was given a f10,soon opened that baby up,but only used it when i had to,did i ,dont think so  keith

Glad to see at least some of us finished early enough to get to the pub.
