I drove a Scania P93m 6 wheeler with drag back in the early 90’s. It was on a D reg & all the rest of the fleet were on limiters but this didn’t have one.
It would do 70 when empty & around 64 when loaded. I’d like to see that now, I know the Irish drivers pass me at 60 now but 70 it was great!

Because we don’t want them to go faster than they should… ““Letting them go down the hills”” is not good for mpg / engine / drivers job !!
I wasnt being funny btw just interested, never knew it was bad for mpg and engine i must say.
Used to follow the petrol tanker guys on there way back to to stanlow in my loaded 143 at 75 across the M56, how times have changed, tanker drivers are as slow as tosco drivers these days, always in ya way!
When I first started I done my 7.5 and had a little canter that done 70 all day everyday until the new law came in that it needed limiting so off it went to get the limiter fitted and ■■■■ every lorry driver on the motorway off with me sat struggling to hit 56 in a Mitsubishi canter I felt like a right ■■■■ sat in a convoy off artics in that thing.
Oh yes we got a brand new fleet of Leylands(tankers) in 1984 from Roadtrain down to Freighter. If I remember correctly they all had Leyland engines apart from the 8 wheelers which had the ■■■■■■■■
The Leylands would do 70+ no problem.
However I also remember a little Ford D series fitted with a ■■■■■■■ V8 which was totally unreliable but went like stink…80+
Back in the mid nineties I was doing recovery work. We had a merc 814 that was limited to 70 (until you pulled the relay),which was pretty nippy.
The two heavies were an F88 and an F10. On the way to a truck in a field winching job,I was in the 88,following the 10.We were chapping on down the motorway and passed the 814 like it was standing still.
The 814 driver was on the phone saying he was doing 75,what ■■■■■■ speed were we doing !!Don’t know mate was the reply-speedo ain’t working. First “big” truck I ever drove and probably the fastest I will ever drive too.
Yep, owned a 3300 Daf 6x2 with the spacecab , cab all black , and bulk steel tipping trailer all black that would do 70mph. Regret that never took any photo’s of it in thoughs days.

Your speedo must of been faulty, speed limiters for trucks back then was 100 kph or 62 mph.
Remember joining the M1 and a driver was hitching a lift so I pulled up.He climbed in and was impressed,he had never been in one of those ‘foreign’ wagons before, this a
Volvo F88 290.Loaded with 20 ton of cauliflowers I ran down the slip road and joined the M1 by which time I was doing 70, as the speed crept upward he stopped talking
then when I approached Woodall he suddenly decided his mate would be in the services and could give him a lift.the look of relief on his face was memorable as he climbed
out.Course best time was during the Falklands war when we were given a bit o’ paper basically ‘no rules’ just get there,Plymouth Devonport docks to Rosyth flat as strap all
the way,all three lanes of the motorway,go,go go. doing our bit for the war effort.great fun.Doubt I would want to do those speeds today seems too busy now.
Not distant history, cos this happened about 2 years ago.
I came off up the ramp at Droitwich northbound one morning, fully fieghted,
giving it everything it had to build up speed ( just as I had on many occasions before ).
Expecting to reach the giveway markings at 50ish at best.
Joined the traffic flow no problem, then though, hey these cars are going slow today.
Glanced down at the speedo, to discover the needle was off the scale,
trying to bash its self against the inbuilt Clock Hands
Im not willin to say whta the last calibrated marking was, it was way past that… anyone formilliar with the old-scale anolog tach-head speedo with inbuilt clock at the six-oclock position will have some idea )
To be honest, thou I wished I hadnt had too But Dare say, Because it was realy nice while it lasted
I was forced to fault the truck for being easily capable of exceeding 60MPH
(i.e failed speed limiter )…
Then watch my speed very carefully until it was repaired.
