Yes, we could all do +70 mph but we had much more time to get the job done, and more time in the pub/bunk
Leyland Roadtrain 1991. Crunchy gearbox, double de clutching, fan heaters that were pants. Fragile air seat, Doors of tinfoil that threatened to dent when you slammed a door shut.
…and a BLUE auxillary suzie!
Bombed along the M4 easily doing 70 though.
Who Remembers when your truck would do 70mph?
Mine still does.

I wasnt being funny btw just interested, never knew it was bad for mpg and engine i must say.
You’re quite clueless really aren’t you? And I bet you think you’re a professional driver as well…

How is it bad for engine if you are in angle gear?
If you mean neutral the gearbox won’t be exactly pleased about it and you’re using more fuel than being in gear.
Mid 70’s between Inverness and Thurso.
Young passenger with old man heading for American base somewhere north of Thurso.
Father driving Caledonian/Forth Leyland Beaver pulling 40ft box tandem, chasing local milk tanker along rural straights.
All ended with friendly waves, but speeds at times were touching the 70 mark.
Great memories, and miss the old fella and those trucking years dearly.
I remember back not so many years ago when I used to do long wheelbase high cube 7.5t’s (in the 90’s) doing 80-85mph down the outside lane of the motorway, in fact my tachometer charts were vertical upward lines to 70+mph around the whole circumference lol
Seems a distant memory I guess.
And of course now that speed limiters are fitted there are no more crashes :lol

Your gonna have to educate us Conor, as for the life of me I can’t think why running down windy hill at 62 mph is gonna use more fuel and damage the engine!
Sure thing!
Both my F88 and Transcon would do 70!

Pwned.
I remember back in the mid to late 80’s when I used to work for my Uncles truck racing team. We had a Cargo with a warmed up ■■■■■■■ L10 under the bonnet, that used to pull three Cargo racing trucks on a flash custom built trailer. That would start getting a bit outta shape over 70 MPH !
in the mid 80’s i worked for a Corby company , he bought quite a few F10 265’s ,which were geared for economy. Except they were’nt very economical running at over 70 all the time. 2 of us ran to Fleetwood and Garston at night. M6 coming home and there wasn’t a lot to touch them, especially as we came back with empty flatbeds, one of them, A303GJF (sold to swifts) was exceptionally quick , good for 80+.
however , they’d nearly all gone after about 12 months , some of them were on about 4mpg , but if you payed on vehicle earnings , thats what you got.
and we got ERF C series with L10 250’s
Hiya …the gas turbine leylands was built for 80mph. no gears just rev and go.
John
This would do 70 but used to sit very comfortably at about 62. This was in 1999 when most others were limited. I had a small nodding dog sat on the door top of the passenger door facing 45 degrees back so it nodded at drivers as I passed 'em.

I think his point was that if you knock it into neutral (silent seventh ) the engine actually uses fuel to tickover, whereas on the overrun in gear no fuel is used.
That’s my take on it, but we are talking about Conor here so whatever he says will usually be slightly wide of factual but stated with the utmost certainty and belief in the correctness of what he’s written.
