A digi. card is the personal responsibility of the driver,if the firm pays for it thats good of them as they dont have to.
The problem today is that the “personal responsibilities” of the driver are getting greater
and more expensive. When I started drivers got their log books free, then paper tachos
free. You only needed one medical and that was when you started. Now it’s every 5 years.
All this dcpc ■■■■■■■■ has to be paid for no matter how much service you have seen. It’s all right if the firm pays but there’s a lot that don’t. Some firms don’t even supply boots, gloves or overalls, then other drivers come on here moaning about the tramps they have seen acting as “firm’s ambassadors”.

I filled in form p87 , sent it off & got a cheque back
But Form P87 is for claiming “Tax Relief on Expenses of Employment”. It says so across the top. I’ve used this form myself, but all I got was the option of a cheque (for the tax I had paid on the expenses claimed) or an adjustment to my tax code (which would reduce my PAYE tax by an equivalent amount) - i.e. I got tax relief on the amount of my expenses.

It would be interesting to see the circumstances under which employers manage to avoid paying for PPE, because AIUI they are obliged to provide it (at no cost to the employee).

You only need a medical every 5 years after you are 45 or 5 years after your 1st if over 40 has been like that for a while now not really new

Ok, but at my age now I need one every 5 years. The point I was trying to make was that until that requirement came out you only needed one when you first applied for your ticket which in my case was 21. That would have sufficed until retirement under the old rules.

been driving with tachos for more than 20years my firm paid for 1st digi card then expect us to pay for our own after that don’t know about everybody else but never paid for paper chart in my life why should I be expected to pay for digi card renewal every 5 yrs now
It’s no wonder the industries [zb] when it’s populated with this type of idiot
If they paid for your first digi card then it seem to me they are not a bad firm to work for. £19 for a card eh…be a man and grow some balls an just [zb] pay it and stop coming on here wingeing about it.
Employer pays my bills, I pay for the card required for them to do that… afterall if I leave for another firm, I take the card with me. Same with Medicals too, required to keep MY licence…
I sent a letter with a receipt & requested a refund as I the is a necessary requirement for the job , 3 weeks later a cheque arrived for £19
Yes - and as it clearly states there “Accordingly the expense of purchasing a digital tachograph card can be allowed as a deduction under s336 ITEPA 2003.” Which means you can claim tax relief on the full amount. It doesn’t mean HMRC will reimburse you whatever you paid. If you managed to get the full £19 then well played!

I just sent the form off , I didn’t make the decision , I also claimed for the washing of my work wear & midday meal allowance for previous 6 years , a large cheque arrived for that & my tax code was changed ,… There was a big thread about that on here a while back , some people successfully claimed others didn’t …
Oh, I got the uniform cleaning allowance added to my tax code (and got a cheque for the previous 4 years’ worth as well). But again, it’s a £60 a year allowance on your tax code - HMRC don’t give you a cheque for £60, just the tax you have paid on it - which is £12 for basic rate tax payers. You must have a very cosy arrangement with the taxman if you managed to get the full cost of your digicard and the last six years’ worth of allowances - ordinary folk can only get the current year + the previous 4 years

For truck drivers its £80yr for cleaning uniform, states quite clearly on HMRC website.
If you can only claim “tax relief” on any meal allowance claim(say approx £10day spent with receipts) made via form P87,
how can the likes of Stobart get away with their drivers “£15day tax free meal allowance” just because they as an employer “haggled” this arrangement direct with HMRC
