Who pays for parking?

When did it become even slightly acceptable for the employed driver to pay for the overnight parking when tramping? I confess I haven’t tramped for 35 years, and am rusty in the current ways of doing things, but I worked for some really tightfisted companies back then and it was not even considered that we should pay for the parking. It seems ludicrous to me that anyone other than the company should pay.

I’ve never heard of any employee paying to park a lorry.

Someone else…

Nope - nearest we get to paying for it is until we get it back as an expense later.

If they wanted me to pay and not get it back then no chance whatsoever of that happening and they’d be told it gets parked in a free place and any theft is their problem not mine!

I’d look for a secure as poss place but that’s it

After parking one time I was informed that I had to get permission prior to parking otherwise I wouldn’t get reimbursed. As we were paid four weekly I got the money but it was the only time I paid to park.

Our lot pay all parking, they aint keen on msa.s (like me) but will pay for them if last resort.
I was talking to a driver of a well known Northern Scottish co, (who I always thought would be a good firm)
Turns out they don’t pay parking, he’d come up the M5, the place he’d intended to park was rammed, could not find anywhere else as time was running out, so he parked on Strensham which was about 25 quid or so.
He had to pay for it himself with no re.imbursement.

I personally would have rang up, told them I’d tried to find a park, was unsuccessful, only alternative was MSA …which I refuse to pay for, so please advise. (in reality I would have just looked a bit sooner, but there you go…just for argument’s sake)
I just think it’s a ■■■■ liberty expecting drivers to pay.

Christ almighty, is this a serious question. If you had to pay for your own parking then you would have a wage packet that resembles a dole cheque at the end of the week. It virtually does now in a lot of cases but come on, seriously who would expect to pay their own parking!!!

I’ve paid it myself maybe once every few months mainly as a last resort as long as get food voucher. Shower etc.
There’s a bloke where I work he always seems get back at decent time on Friday. . I once said something. He said I use m 6 toll every Friday if I’m that way pay it my self. Forget that for a game of soldiers.

When you say “pay it yourself” - you do mean you get it back whenever your paid or at the end of the week/month?

God no tried claim it back was told not a chance. As say once in a blue moon if desperate and avoid motorways. .

Your choice but sod that for a game.

No pay = no secure parking (although that’s a bit of a joke at MSA’s) and me parking potentially earlier and further from the destination as I won’t do lay bys unless completely unavoidable or they are well off the road. Prefer Ind. Estates and grabbing a shower prior to parking anyway but it’s nice to know I get refunded for any expense.

(From experience) the likes of Polypipe only pay the 1st £15 of parking, (repaid in wages)

It’s there motor,so they should pay parking, if not the diesel fairies might come knocking,or Mr Stanley, …
Were reimbursed all parking, weekly, there’s a cough at the MSA charges,we also have snap.

My firm are the same.
Never used it though.

My firm. No questions asked. Chuck a meal voucher in there and that gets paid too upon presentation of receipts.

M6 Toll if needed get a shoved on Keyfuels card.

Company lorry = company pay

Racking me brain here, but can’t recall ever working for an outfit that desperate they refused to pay parking :open_mouth:

Never been keen on MSA’s anyway due to noise, the real likelihood of the lorry getting damaged, and crap food.
My ideal overnight was somewhere just off a quiet road within walking distance of a pub that does good food, couple of pints and decent nosh up, but the most important thing…getting away from the bloody lorry and being a normal person for a few hours.

Worked for places that wouldn’t pay parking so you didn’t use MSA/truck stops but I can’t decide if you are asking if any drivers pay out of their night out money?.

Currently I’m weekly paid so any expenses for parking incurred will be back in my account by the next Wednesday. The best Co I ever worked for ( Imperial Tankers) gave the trampers a £400 float for any expenses (unfortunately they never asked for it back when I left  ), however I guarantee that if I worked anywhere that refused to pay parking then I’d abandon it anywhere on a night, preferably in a high risk area. If their business model is such that they’ve cut the rate that much to the bone that a parking fee wipes out their profit then their business model is wrong and they need to either change it or shut up shop.

Small.company I worked for used to pay parking but we played fair. Big company takes us over and says it doesn’t pay parking. I said that if they were parking me up for 12 or longer I would expect paid parking. Nope. We parted company.
