These ‘dead mans shoes’ firms are the last bastion of the union blowhards. Full of ex shop stewards arranging the next vacancy for ‘our kid’. Thats why you know nothing about payscale etc. How any firm can afford to pay a driver 80k a year is beyond me. No wonder so much industry is moving abroad.

The unions did turn out to have too much power in the end, but who fights for our rights and conditions now, or are you content or even happy to be doing what equates to a week and a halfs work in a week for next to ■■■■ all?
Rob, isn’t that the whole point? I would not get offered a job there…ever. Like nearly everybody on here who is not related to present staff. I would love every driver on here to earn big money, but then there is the commercial reality. When you have had to endure Liverpool docks in the bad old days, and union cronies staffing all the best paying jobs in the area it does make you a little bitter.

Yeh ok, but it’s only natural that if a job came up at one of these firms that you worked for, that you would try and get your mate/boy/brother in before a stranger, that’s rightly or wrongly how things work in life, as I’m sure that you already know.
As for the “commercial reality” bit, yeh I see that, but why is it that if a firm puts a lower rate in to compete with an already crap rate, it is the first option that it will be inevitably subsidised by an equally crap driver’s wage, why not just watch the competitor work for ■■■■ all until he eventually and predictably goes bust, then put in a reasonable realistic rate where everybody including the driver gets a bite at the cherry.
As for the Unions, the concept was good but they did lose their way and forget what they were there for.

None of you will demand a payrise because you all believe your boss when he tells you that you are lucky to have a job. For a job with a very macho image there seem to be a lot of whimps when it comes to improving things.
I wont rub it in any longer but when some know it all posts that these earnings are impossible then just direct them to this post and the one from Left hand down. The only people preventing drivers from earning these rates are drivers, not their bosses, not the economy, just drivers.

i don’t doubt what you say you earn, would i be right in thinking you only need a relatively small % of what you earn, if at all any to survive? i’d say most of the people working on a s/e basis on big dollar have a take it or leave it attitude due to not needing the money, now fair play to anybody who has engineered that situation for themselves, but a lot of people will be in that situation through luck, like inheritance etc.
just because you can earn that, doesn’t mean everyone can. if everyone selling a house doubled the price, then house prices would rise and buyers would have to pay more, but if everyone buying a house only offered half of the asking price, then house prices would fall and sellers would have to sell for less, the deal is done when it’s acceptable to both sides.

I regularly invoice someone a bag a sand a week 
but I work hard for it too!

People should stop making this occupation sound like it’s low paid!!! The majority of good firms pay well and I still consider my decision to gain my HGV licence all those years ago a wise move. I still love the industry and I won’t be changing what I do until such time I’m unable to work any more. So don’t put young people off. It’s become a professional job and a good one to be involved with. Btw I’m mearly a night trunker and it’s easy peasy work and it’s a proper good buzz shifting freight through the night . And I get paid well for doing something I love!

What’s good pay? It should always be on a basic, not overtime. If it didn’t pay a decent basic, I’d do something else.

Does the “wind up merchant” apply to me as well because I posted a month’s earnings to silence some of the nay-sayers in this thread?
If I recall correctly you are not far away from me and deliver office furniture in a wag and drag (?) so I would be expecting very good money for doing that work too as I doubt they’ll have people queueing up to do it.
