Sorry to be asking so many questions so soon, but I’m going back on the road tramping after 11 years so I might as well get them out the way!
When I was out tramping last I had a bag full of a-z’s and a map so now we have these new fangled digital truck navigations systems! which one should I go for? There’s plenty on eBay ranging from £50-£200
any ideas?

I have snooper 8500, the nav is quite pants but the telly, dab, video and mp3 player are grill, all through the truck radio on the FM sender. Mint. The hands frees not so hot, you have to shout at it to be heard.
The nav does do bridges, weights and so on but will still send you up a side road, keeps on telling you to turn round instead of recalculating if you go a different way but bloody makes sure you don’t miss a junction! She bangs on about 1 mile, 700 yards, at the start of the junction at the exit of the roundabout… There’s me telling her to shut up! nearly every time…
I seriously doubt that a sat nav that doesn’t have any issues exists I have a snooper it will sometimes lock usually if scrolling around The way that its programed leaves a lot to be desired, as do some of the routes it throws up , it will persist with the original route for far to long before auto re routing you, the mapping needs some attention in places, I get the feeling that someone without a brain was involved
Now if someone created a sat nav that had 100% correct mapping and upto date, with proper routing based on time of day day of week , my snooper made me chuckle at the euro tunnel ,coquelles (Calais ) side, waiting in lanes it says now take ferry even though it shows a graphic of a train, also perish the thought if you are goin to use Dunkirk ferry back to blighty, as you will have to specifically tell it you want to use a different cross channel route than the train or Calais dover ferry,
Routing for hgv’s not always good, sometimes it us better to ignore it, just because a truck maybe able to drive through a village (legally) doesn’t always mean that it is the quickest route, when going around said village is only a few k’s more and minutes longer , but less stressful and often quicker
I’ve been using one of the cheep chineese ones from eBay for the last 3 weeks on low loader work. Some of the places we have to go are pretty obscure and its not let me down yet. Only cost 40quid as well. As said before always worth double checking with a good old map.
I just use Google Maps on my mobile phone plus MK1 eyeball connected to MK1 brain. I keep a paper atlas for low bridge heights but I’ve not had any problems. Being able to press an icon on the phone, say “Howdens Joinery Irlam” to it then just hit Navigate makes things a whole lot easier. Beauty is that because its online getting realtime traffic info it’ll keep you updated as it goes along.
Most of have enough mileage behind us that we can look at where something is on a map and only really need the Satnav for the last mile or two anyway.
I’m another cheap-skate with a NozaTech-Tec for the past six months. Seems ok and a few really useful features, like after pressing find, it suggests two destinations: a drop from your favorites or base.

Was pretty happy with my 5150 but for some reason it has been thinking all month that the M1/M25 junction and the M1 Northbound from 15 has been shut…
that happens with my go 7000 sometimes mate
just cos the road was shut one night it thinks it is shut every night
best thing to do is stick a pin in the reset hole to clear the memory

Good advice - Except there is no reset hole on the 5150…
TBH rebooting the 5150 (and all the other later TomToms) doesn’t generally achieve much when problems like this occur. What’s usually needed is to connect to a computer, remove the map and then reload it. Doing this removes not only the map, but also the corrupted traffic info.
