Night heaters were a primus stove on the dash board or bonnet you lot don,t know the half of it bring back the good old days
All our night heater was was an extra sleeping bag or two
Or a military one with just your face showing many a time I woke up to find I had turned in it during the night!!! Had hell of a job getting out of it!!

ERFs again, Charlie are you gonna tell him or shall I
newmercman only going on my experience with the mercs, which so far after 2 yrs has not been good, the erfs not the best to drive has always got me home.i had one of the first actros`s in the country,(r reg i think)on test for a month which was a good motor ( apart from crap brakes) seems to make the axor a bit of a unreliable joke.
Iâve never driven an Axor for a living but they canât be all bad or Tesco/TNT etc wouldnât use them, in my experience it was the other way around, the early Actros was a bad motor, a bit too much too soon with the technology. theyâre ok now though.
I thought iâd ressurect this thread for us new boys
From my own experience of british lorries , I have to say they were usually sheds , ERFâs- the âplastic pigsâ & the interiorâ â ? Some of the plastic wouldnât have been out of place in a milk tray box Leyland roadtrain, the header panels- all made out of cheap tin & the axle whine?? Sudden Accidents⌠that heavy clutch- great in London as well as the not so excellent lock A leyland cruiser that you could not avoid kangarooing! Was a shame as i liked the â â â â â â â 14lts & rolls engines & the fuller box , but the rest of them
That was their downfall, the build quality . Buying in bits from Tom â â â â & harry you have no control over it, where as the swedes & germans they are rather well put together .
scammell highwaymen were a bit uncomfortable but you only used the clutch for stopping and starting Atki viewline was a good motor only a 250 â â â â â â â and 6 speed ZF geared down to 46 mph but general haulage wagons would get under its feet grossing 60 tons on hills but the SCAMMELL CRUSADER would blow all the foreigners off the road when they first came out and it was a pity they never upgraded it as it was only minor things which let them down and the day cab had more room than some so called sleeper cabs and they were very quick off the mark as they would surprise a lot of car drivers from standing start.
what a very interesting thread , as we all have differant tastes and from what era we started driving in and to drive a truck with no speed limiter oh what joy , ok the roads did have fewer idiots on then , enough of my ramblings for reliability and sheer power ERF E series 14 ltr of pleasure , but even better than that i have to go back to 1980 and please dont laugh as there was some dud ones about i must have been lucky berliet tr 305 a dream to drive and never let me down , and if you wanted to be in a hurry it would oblige (bothwell to reading 6 hrs with 21 ton waste paper on )
Hiya âŚtimes change in 1968 the guy big J seemed better than the F88 to which i hadn,t seen. but when it comes to stopping

iyou have just remineded me why i liked it so much
Just found this interresting thread thanks to tonyhogi bumping it up.
For what itâs worth I never minded what make I was given so long as it was clean, and not abused.
These days though you can keep your fancy units, any 3.5 tonner would do to cut out all the regs and restrictions, there doesnât seem much difference in pay either ⌠anyone need a van driver
Bubbs made an interesting comment on his âscrapbookâ thread about the T reg F10 not looking 30 years old , Rewind back to 1977/78 when they came out & look at the compareable brit. competition at the time :Scammell crusader , Leyland marathon , seddon atki 400 ,Bedford TM ,ERF b series ⌠The F10 had wall to wall carpet, plush trim, illuminated switches, aircon, synchro box, car-like quietness not to mention a âsafety cabâ . I had a D reg Roadtrain & it still felt old fashioned compared to the F10 .

I agree british truck makers was a joke or the company,s that was buying them. i think Sid Harrison has got a 1968(F) reg bonneted Scammell.
what planet was leyland on when you could get a 1967 (E) reg 110 with a sleeper cab.also a mighty F86.sheer luxury.
John
YOU ALL KNOW THAT WHEN THE SWEDES CAME OVER THAT WAS SERIOUSLY THE END OF BRITISH TRUCKS,BUT IHAVE TO SAY IF FOREVER
MISFORGIVEN REASON I WOULD LOVE TO DO UP A MARATHON 2 ⌠BUT THEN AGAIN I DO LOVE LAND ROVERS,SO MAYBE IM MAD
