Right, as many know I have recently been given the green light to say I am working for Clipper logistics in the warehouse. And it is now official with me getting the letter through yesterday morning, but one thing that I’m a bit confused over is I get a choice of how I want to work. Whether I want to work Monday to friday doing 42.5 hours a week, or whether I want to do 4 on 4 off at 48 hours a week. Obviously I’ll be paid more on the 4 on 4 off working bit but whats the pros and cons of both?
Have to go in on Monday and sign the papers and what not, which apparently is going to take 3 hours Nervous but excited at the same time
If you don’t mind working the odd weekend then 4 on 4 off is not bad at all, it’s just that you have to work 12hrs a day, but it’s still better than a normal week of 5 on 2 off. Also if you take 4 days off you actually get 12 days straight
also remember it might well be shifts days /nights.
When do you start?
I don’t mind working weekends to be honest and the shifts i’d be working I was told i specifically would be on is 8 until 5 with the chance of overtime after that upon short notice which doesn’t bother me in the slightest And I don’t start until the 30th of this month, but have to go in on Monday to sign some papers to say I’m raring to go etc And to pick up my uniform and safety stuff I presume
Not too bothered how they pay me as long as I’m getting paid I’ll find out at the meeting on Monday, but I think I get paid every 4 weeks so either way my bank accounts going to look better than it does now And I’m guaranteed the work as well which is another bonus of not having to worry about whether I’m going to be working tomorrow or not
With 4 on 4 off you work half the year so thats 182 days. But then you have 28 days holiday so you only work 154 days a year.
Working Mon - Friday you do 52 x 5 days so 260 days. Take off the 28 days holiday and you’re working 232 days for the same money so doing an extra 78 days graft.
When you take your holidays, on 4 on 4 off taking 4 days holidays gets you 12 days off in a row. Working Mon-Fri taking 4 days off gets you 6 days in a row or taking 5 days off gets you 9 days in a row so you can see it is better on 4 on 4 off.
For gaining those extra 78 days you have to give up some full weekends and some weekends where you work the Saturday or the Sunday. It works in an 8 week cycle.
Assuming you start on Mon:
Week 1 - weekend off
Week 2- weekend off
Week 3 - work sat
week 4 - work weekend
week 5 - work weekend
week 6 - work weekend
week 7 - work Sunday
week 8 - weekend off
Week 9 same as week one, rinse and repeat. So as you can see you get three weekends off in a row, work one weekend day, then work three weekends, work one weekend day then bac, to three weekends off.
The biggest pain in the arse for some people is working on a weekend but IMO the trade off is worth it.

it’s not 48hrs a week unless its an 8 day week
The hours are the same for both shifts so money will be the same, good job your not in the accounting department
I’d go for the 4/4, as has been said several times it looks a better system. The job I’m applying for is 4/4 with the chance of an extra day overtime each week. Got any lighters to sell?

It will take them 3 hours to give you the H&S briefing. You can’t breathe these days without a H&S risk assessment
Glad it’s all going well for you. Hopefully the start to getting the funds together to get your driving career going.
Personally I would take the 4 on 4 off. 12 hour shifts are nothing really. If you are kept busy you won’t notice the time fly.
That’s probably all it is Health and Safety the do’s and don’t although it’s all pretty much common sense anyway. And thats what my first/second month’s wages will be going on for my driving lessons/tests etc then I can save up for the important tests at least Although I will have words with them see if they would help me with my HGV training first to stop me paying out (With me being a yorkshireman paying out money is not my idea of fun )
Hopefully it will go a lot better than it did at my old job, but I think it will considering I’ve more to gain with this job than I did at my old job. The only thing to gain at my old job was weight from all the sweets you could eat at the end of your shift.

As I say i’m only going on rough estimates of what I think the times are. I’m assuming the shifts are 12 hours each as that’s what it states on the letter but in the interview they said 8 while 5 so haven’t a clue if that means I start anywhere in that time
And funny you should mention that I had a year in the finance office at saint gobain glass in eggborough a couple years ago Mind you the only thing that I liked about that work experience was the nice views either side of me
Hi Johnny,
From what I can make out from your original post is that your choice is 42.5 hrs Mon-Fri or 4on 4off 12 hr shift. You asked which is best and for the same money and hours 4on 4off is best for the reasons mentioned above, also if your asked to do an extra shift , you’ll still get 3 days off
I think I’ll be choosing 4 on and 4 off that’s assuming i get the choice of course
As has already been said I have more time to myself doing that also I don’t mind working weekends, it’ll mean my parents can’t go out on the weekends I work Happy days !
I do 4 on 4 off. It took getting used to but its great as 4 days holiday makes you off 12 days. Just the you could go for you class 2 with 4 days holiday
I never thought of it like that Plus with me wanting to do a week intensive driving course to get my license I can make it work round my job without having to take any days off
