Which do you drive mostly? Manual or auto/semi auto?

Which do you drive mostly?

I have a Scania GRS 900. It is a 3 over 3 with a spiltter.

I’d swap it tomorrow for a Scania Opticruise, or a Volvo I-Shift.

If I was offered a ZF AS-Tronic in a MAN, DAF or Iveco I’d tell you to shove it.

Not tried the new M-B PowerShift yet - but looks very good on paper.

Not driven an auto truck, only manual
can’t beat the 16sp zf box on recent stuff
best box I have ever driven

Eaton twin splitter
and thats coming from a newbie

i would have an auto but i am on an 06 daf with a 16 speed gearbox

Ive driven an auto Renault magnum for the past year.easy life  before that it was a DAF with the 16sp zf box, that was pretty nice

I drive a DAF CF85 430 with auto box, theres no way I would want to go back to a manual gearbox now,
however if you just keep your right foot flat on the gas pedal through the gears it uses a lot more revs than are needed, going up to 1700 revs before changing up. If I drive it in semi auto mode and keep the revs in the green all the time I can get an extra mile per gallon out of it over a typical day.
I also tend to use semi auto on single carraigeways as it can never decide if it should be in 11th or 12th at 40mph and constantly goes up and down.
My vehicle is an 06 reg and not the very latest engine and has gearshift on engine hump, maybe the newer model is better?

Almost always manual. I’ve only ever driven two types of Auto - Volvo I-shift and whatever DAF use (ZF?) The Volvos were Wincanton modified jobs so just choose forward/reverse and leave them to do their thing, which they do well. The DAF was unmolested and the “manual” mode very good but in auto the revs were all over the place, using the exhaust brake made it change down about 3 gears so no good for holding back on a gentle descent and even using the “tortoise” switch I found it difficult to manouvre slowly. That said, it was my only experience of this box so it was probably me fouling it up. Can’t remember what mpg I got but it was pretty bad!

Been in autos now for the best part of two years , the whole fleet is auto.
The MANS are fully auto whilst the Volovo’s are a semi .
The MANS are going soon (funnily enough everyone including the boss thinks they are crap , they are being dumped on other depots  )
When they are gone the whole of our fleet will be Semi Volvo’s (i-shift)

Got so used to them now that when I drive a manual truck having to change gear all the time becomes a pain in the arse

don’t kow if it counts but i started a new job yesterday driving a daf xf with a 12 speed semi auto box. i think it’s great but haven’t really driven anything to compare it to. although i have been left high and dry on a couple of roundabouts but thats due to MY lack of experience

The best auto box in the world is I-shift , it’s official because I said so .

Volvo i-shift awesome can’t beat it. [/b]

I drive the 410 manual man tga’s more
but prefer the 430 man tga autos. The
manuals get better fuel economy but they
are getting all autos soon

what he said :arrow_right:

Mainly manual, but sometimes three pedal semi-auto.

Only downside is that when I try to rest my arm on the gear lever, it ain’t there, and I nearly fall out of the seat.

We will be gatting them MAN tgaxxl soon mate. Had one on demo last week . i loved it !!

:frowning: I find myself getting more and more attactched to the automatics i think they are cause my laziness to evolve in to something i can no longer control. :frowning:

Driving a very manual FM at the moment, but don’t let Lucy read this thread or you may learn that your auto isn’t automatic…

Just leaving

i drive mainly auto, semi, manual auto (is that all of them Luce? :stuck_out_tongue: ) but i would take a manual over any of them with the exception of an actros. the clutch is still present so i would take that with no complaints

For my sins, a MAN auto… :frowning: which is no better than a DAF auto… Neither has any intelligence, they just know to change up or down at a fixed RPM… And don’t even mention the STUPID kickdown, that, in a DAF will drop from 12th at 54, to 10th…!!! causing nothing but more black smoke and lots of noise… :unamused:

The Volvo’s on the other hand (Somerfield white FM12 Globies) are fantastic… Had a good 2years in them… Always in the right gear, no complaints at all, which coming from someone who REALLY hates auto’s, that not bad

I have driven a MAN manual a couple of times, with one of those ‘clutch’ buttons on the stick, and found that to be quite ace, altho the cluth pedal is very heavy as a pay off… but racin other trucks up a hill is ace with a splitter that takes 0.00000001 seconds to change…

Give me a Manual ANY day… You can rag them better…

Chrisie… :sunglasses:
