I drive anything they give me the keys for …
but given the choice its gotta be a volvo auto
why exactly would you want to use the kick down at 54mph in 12th? At that speed the engine is already working at almost peak torque.
Getting used to going down hill at 54mph, 2300 revs in 10th gets some getting used to though but the engine brake does actually work if you can put up with the noise!
First drove a 2 pedal Leyland Beaver in the early '70s, though still had to change gear with the small lever on the dash, like the buses used to be. Was a good few years then before driving Volvo’s Geartronic which was good but crude by today’s standards and wasn’t so good in the snow as a manual. Then drove MAN autos which I thought great until getting the Volvo Ishift. Given the choice, I’d happily never drive a manual box again.
I drive a MAN auto and I don’t like it!
It needs a written invitation to pull out onto a roundabout and then trundles out casually as if we’re on holiday
I had a chat with a training bod from MAN/ERF recently, who said that I was probably pushing the pedal too far down engaging kick-down, making it pause and search for the appropriate gear
So I tried being gentle and pressing down slowly, and it made not one jot of difference
Other things that make no difference, are: swearing at it, thumping the steering wheel, and stopping on the side of the road to hit it with half a tree
DAF 4 over 4 Manual.
I drive my opticruise in auto and flick it into manual(only 12 down to 11) on the start of big hills, find the 480 flies and hangs on up the hills a lot better by dropping just a half a gear.
Just got out of a 05 Fh12 460 with I-shift into a 07 FH 13 480 with I-shift, wouldn’t want to go back to a manual. Only with the kick-down was enabled as it was with the FH12. Gearbox program we run means it is diabled though Volvo tell you its not needed.

I didn’t mean I was doing it on purpose… Any accidental prod of the pedal will do it, especially in a DUF cuz there’s no shock absorber on the seat, so you bounce up ‘n’ down all nite… The smallest bump in the road is unuf of a wobble to warrent it deciding that you want 10th at 54… !!!

Chrisie…
I,ve been driving a DAF CF with AS TRONIC since last september and never accidently activated the kick down, maybe you should get some lighter boots!
Grumpybum…thats just MAN gearboxes 4 ya…there r absoultely ■■■■■■
What year is it■■?..they got a bit better after 05…or 55…one of the two
■■■■■ waste of metal anyhow
i drive a 54 plate 26 ton scanny with the 12 speed opti cruise… what a bag of crap the amount of times ive been nearly killed on roundabouts and junctions is untrue …saying that we are gettin the new p series 270 26 tonners, we already got one on a 07 plate took it out the other day that got 8 speed opitcruise box and is really nice to drive…best auto ive driven is volvo i shift which is the dogs bolloxz
i drive a daf cf 75 with 12 speed as tronic auto and i dont really like it, you seem to constantly have to try and predict what its going to do when pulling away at islands, etc sometimes it pulls away ok and then the next time it goes through every gear, even if you do exactly the same with the throttle. i had the same truck with a 4 over 4 manual before and would much rather have that back. we do a lot of building site work and its harder to back into a tight gap with the auto as well, much less control over it.
its sometimes quite nice to drive in traffic etc though, much lazier
having driven an actros for the last 4 years both older and newer models i have to say theres good and bad points with the transmission it takes far to long to change gear and if your going up hill you need to drop it 2 or 3 cos by the time it changes you’ve lost too much momentum, having said that when i first passed my test years ago i got into a brand new erf
my god going up the box wasnt too bad but i could of taken requests coming down the gears you name i’ll play it dont know what kind of gearbox it was (and i call myself a driver lol) but it had a 3 way collar on the gearstick, in the 6 months i drove that i had no idea what gear i was in
That’l be the twin splitter.
