Where have all the good drivers gone

Spardo:
That’s fair enough Bikemonkey, so naturally you wouldn’t apply for a job there. I think AJB’s point was about drivers who do take the job knowing what it entails and then moan like buggery or worse when it doesn’t always go at their convenience.
The jibe about monkeys is often valid but not entirely fair in this case, there really are people who prefer to take home a little less to do a job they like.

And that david my friend sums it up in a nutshell.
I could earn far more on an agency being home every night(and i dont knock those who do)… But i dont want to! I like being away in europe(cue “you dont love your wife and kids if you arent home every night” brigade :unamused: )
When i worked at RH they had over a thousand tilts scattered throughout europe and scandinavia… I knew when i went for the job that it involved being away for three or four weeks at a time, and stripping tilts was part and parcel of the job.
But we still had blokes moaning and groaning that they “didnt do tilts”… “didnt do weekends away”… didnt do this didnt do that…
Good luck finding a decent driver alan. There arent many left.

Why is it so hard to find a good driver.

All we seem to get is the drivers that dont want to be away at week ends, dont want a night out tonight as my dog is sick, dont send me to London, I hate London, got to be home Friday, my wife will go mad if Im not, dont want to go to Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, would rather stay in UK.

We get all the excusses under the sun, in this business its hard enough to make money, and when you have drivers that dont want to be drivers its even harder.

Thats my moan for the week, its 1120am and Im just off to Dover to take a load to Belgium and tip in the morning (Saturday), then have a weekend parked up at Meer truck stop then reload Holland Monday, Im the boss of a 22 vehicle company, I thought that that would be enough to keep me busy, but I still love to get away and do a bit, weekends away or not.

Any of the old school of drivers looking for a job, dont mind being away all week with the odd weekend away, pm me, we pay well, good trucks, Magnums, DAF super spacen cabs, food tanker work.

I appreciate that a driver is entitled to a home life, but the old school continental driver, knows the score and did the job with all the crap that went with it, if they want to be home every night, dont apply for a job that entails driving on the other side of the road.

I could not agree with you more :frowning:

You might have had a good driver if you at least replied to you PM’s.
I sent you a PM and you didn’t even have the decency to reply even to say no thank you.
So you have no right to even think about abouty saying that

Have you checked your Outbox Okey, he may not have even read it yet if he has been away?

And JB - isn’t that 2 nutshells?

On the subject of preferences and what you were saying, I can safely say I have never taken a job because of the wages compared to another, as long as I could afford to take it.
After all, job satisfaction is part of the wages IMO, put a price on it and add it to the equation.

It doesn’t take 2 vminutes to reply to a pm.

I don’t care if somebody becomes an enemy especially if they’ve not got common decency, andf i wouldn’t want to work for him anyway, I’m happy with the job I’ve got.

whats all the fuss you are kicking up for then■■?

Where have all the good drivers gone?

By the sound of things, the good drivers have all got tired of waiting and found work else where.
A few of those who think they are good drivers may still be waiting around, hoping they’ll be contacted.

The rest of us are sitting with our feet up in sunnier climes

Who you working for, Ido Italy most weeks and agree with you.

I am sorry for not replying to all of you who sent me a PM, I did reply to some, but was a bit pee’d off when my PM to one about the wages was posted on the site.

What the post didnt say about the wages was we pay 10% of the weekly profit the truck makes and £12 per hour and £16 per hour for 8 hours Sat & Sunday if weekended, some of our drivers take home over £600 a week.

We have fillede the vacancy, and again, I am sorry if some of you are upset for not getting a reply, but try running 22 vehicles and driving and see how much time you get to reply to 40 plus PM’s.

To top it all, gave a driver 5 deliveries in an artic for Monday, Mortlake, Battersea, Hemmel, Edmonton & Park Royal reload Park Royal back to Newbury and he just phoned me to say it is to muck and he jacked, so who has to cancel my day in office and do the job, ME.

All I want is a driver to do the job he is paid to do, without the attitude or moaning to my customers, moan to me, I can sort it, my customers dont want to hear it, but drivers like that are few and far between.

I dont need to read my own typing as one put it or like the sound of my own voice, I am a hard working person, I dont expect my drivers to do what I do, I work 7 days a week, havnt had a proper holiday in 15 years, but thats what I and many small company bosses do, its not a job its a way of life.

So again many thanks for all that contacted me, and sorry for not repling to you all, if you are upset by me not replying, get a life.

i wouldnt think anyone is upset alan or need to get a life for being so.
its just good manners to reply to the people including myself whom pmed you when you made your post looking for drivers.
i appreciate you being a busy man but it does excuse bad manners.

Hi Alanjblack, I’m an old bloke now, in age only, but not in myself. I had my own lorries for years always running over the water, almost everywhere during the 30 years I was in business. I am retired now and spend my winters in Portugal, I always try to do some work when I come back home, mostly to occupy myself. Having lived in a cab for years, spending weekends in some really godforsaken places, and naturally spending most nights out, and still enjoyed the job, I really don’t understand this attitude of these so called drivers either. I shall be home about May 21st, if your short of a pair of hands, give me a bell (pm)

That sound like a pretty standard week on Italy, to me.

I would look at the way you charge for the job, if I was you.
Surely the idea is to make money from the job, or have I got this strange idea from somewhere else ?

I don’t go to Italy any more, due to a job change, but that sounds like a typical week to me and it’s the way they’ve always done it.
Why would they change?

Recently I have had several people tell me that doing Germany can no longer pay, due to the increased costs of MAUT / Toll Collect, whatever. This is an additional cost of something like €80 - 160 a week, per truck (against 0 road taxs, pre MAUT). Apparently this cost cannot possibly be passed onto the customer, because they will not pay.
If the customer wants their goods moved to Germany, then they will have to pay, because if they don’t, their goods are going no-where.
Everyone, moving goods by truck, in Germany has to pay the tax. Even the old Eastern Block companies have to pass these charges on.
