Where have all the good drivers gone

greg50:
spardo, would you not be better off getting a french pension.
.

I have got one of those as well, but you only get back according to what you pay in over the years, and I only worked here for 3 years before retiring so the English ones are the majors.
I am sure TB wanted to go into the euro some years back but Gordie talked him out of it - one more reason to hate the both of them. :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I’ve just got 300 euros for £250, absolutely terrible, before we know it the £ & the euro will be worth the same, could this be a way of getting the euro into the UK by the back door

Its not good…duty free shopping will be feeling the hit am sure,

Lat Sept it was 1.45 to ÂŁ now its 1.20 odd! Gonna put people off goin into Euroland for their hols!

ros.
yes they have switch island open everyday.
i have all my friends in ireland warned and told how to avoid it.

it seems to be only foreign lorries, mostly irish they are puling here,iv gone by driving uk reg and had no prob.
problem is.
security.
i would refuse to park there overnight myself unless they had security.
i heard of an attempted robbery a few weeks ago.
a guy parked up for 24 hrs and him with a load ot televisions on.
the wrong people heard about it,but he was warned by a mutual frind of yours and mine and got the police to ■■■■■■ him into the dock.
its nice and dark inthere at night as well ros.
no lights whatsoever, came by it last night at 9oc.there were trucks there but not a light.
tghe police are out of order and abusing their positions here as far as i am concerned.
i emailed the irish dept of transport about it to put them in the picture of the crap that goes on with those vosa [zb].
thats what they are to me.
i am still waiting for an answer.
they are always busy with the teapot in the dept of transport in dublin.

Tried to claw a little bit back by ordering my new computer from England and paying with my ever more valuable euros. Reckon to have saved around € 75 on the deal.
Not much but - every little helps. :unamused:

Why is it so hard to find a good driver.

All we seem to get is the drivers that dont want to be away at week ends, dont want a night out tonight as my dog is sick, dont send me to London, I hate London, got to be home Friday, my wife will go mad if Im not, dont want to go to Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, would rather stay in UK.

We get all the excusses under the sun, in this business its hard enough to make money, and when you have drivers that dont want to be drivers its even harder.

Thats my moan for the week, its 1120am and Im just off to Dover to take a load to Belgium and tip in the morning (Saturday), then have a weekend parked up at Meer truck stop then reload Holland Monday, Im the boss of a 22 vehicle
company, I thought that that would be enough to keep me busy, but I still love to get away and do a bit, weekends away or not.

Any of the old school of drivers looking for a job, dont mind being away all week with the odd weekend away, pm me, we pay well, good trucks, Magnums, DAF super spacen cabs, food tanker work.

I appreciate that a driver is entitled to a home life, but the old school continental driver, knows the score and did the job with all the crap that went with it, if they want to be home every night, dont apply for a job that entails driving on the other side of the road.

hello alan.
you were looking for good experienced drivers.
i assume experienced european drivers.
i offered to drive for you as well as some other experienced drivers on this board whom i know and was aware of them replying to you as well.
tanker work no prob as we have all done it before.
we are experienced men.
were you looking to get a list of drivers to cherry pick from, or window shopping.?
you still have not answered some of the pms you received.
i personally know of three unanswered pms

by your post,it appeared you were stuck for drivers.
can you clarify when you do return to the board,
why the seemingly urgent need for drivers that you dont appear to really want?
you went back out yourself and have not reappeared since wed i think.
you did say you would reply to all the pms om the weekend.
its now after midnight sun and you havnt reappeared back on the board or replied to some of your pms.
i appreciate the fact you may be busy and out tipping/loading etc but theres people here who would like to know what the position is.
i am one of them.
do you want drivers or not?
i suppose this will disqualify me from the job if there is one,
but i have to speak my mind and never hold back no matter what the price is.
i dont leave anyone wondering what i think.
thanks anyway alan.

i agree with you greg.

its not nice to keep people hanging on a bit of string jd.

Read Alans comments again. He says he will PROBABLY reply at the weekend. His next message says he’s weekended at Meer. Guess thats why you haven’t heard from him.

he was weekended 2 weekends ago gb1.
he went ouit on fri 28th and sat in meer on the 29th/30th.
he was back in england and went back out the following week mid week.
ha had a meeting on fri and did say he would probably answer on the weekend.
thats all right but he still hasnt answered.
i myself am waiting to get back to work after being out for a while due to illness.
every week does matter when you are in this situation,
and his post did look like he was badly stuck.
we cant wait around indfinitely waiting for him.
i turned down a job at home in the hope that he would ring because its easier for me to commute to berkshire than getting boats and planes over to dublin.
tha irish job may still be available,im not sure.
however i am at this moment in time not working.

i put a new topic on here to see about a job with a uk haulier for this reason.
boats and planes dont do anything for me.

Has anyone had a call yet off Alanjblack??

To be fair to the guy, sounds like he was just having general rant about the low standards of drivers he has found lately. Rather than a desperate plea for drivers.

If you read the last post, dated 31st March.

Just got back from Holland tipping and out again tomorrow, will go through the 20 plus PM’s that I have had and will reply, possibly at the weekend, got a meeting on Friday, will be able to make a plan for recruiting after that meeting.

Sounds like he was having a meeting Friday 4th, and will be looking towards a plan for recruiting after that, it’s only been a week, and these things take time.

On a personal note, looking at your website AJB Hauliers, I live a half mile up the road from your head office  I’m 22 with a C+E but only a years experience on 7.5t, so probably not what you are looking for, but if you are stuck in a couple of years maybe give me a shout.

Jobs for a newbie C+E around here are like rocking horse excreta.

All the best.

maybe goose that alan will take a chance on you and give you a try and try and mould you into the driver he wants…

Thats the part that gives it away :unamused:

Trubrit:
Dumping your truck and flying home…there is nothing lower.
I would change over anywhere but Dover, Calais was fine.
The job is not for everyone and even the most enthusiastic driver still has to give consideration to the family…luckily I always had a green light.
Too old at 55 sugar ray? never, it’s just a number…experience must count for something

Now ive heard about a Avialink driver doing that at Madrid airport

use a name:
We may be recruiting, we run food tankers to Belgium, Holland, France & Germany.

We pay ÂŁ90 a day Monday to Friday plus ÂŁ25 night out over the water ÂŁ20 uk.
We also pay £12 per hour Saturday & £16 per hour Sunday and bank holiday’s.

PM me if you may be interested, we are based in Newbury, run DAF 95 Super Space Cabs, Magnums.
this was posted by alanjblack on march 16th 2008

From 30 years experience most of them lie to the driver too.

No we dont run bent, we pay every hour worked in the same breath :stuck_out_tongue:

Im trying not to be negative here.I’d like to do continental but tbh for £90 a day flat rate + nights out is ■■■■.
I do UK away 4/5 nights a week, home for 1.5 -2 days a week,I get on with the job,not a day off in over 8 years, but to be weekended on the continent away from the family for that sort of money, certainly would’nt get me going.
Im on 80 now for 11 hours and a tenner after that (averaging 65-70 hrs a week)+ ÂŁ22.50 night out +ÂŁ2 lunch money a day.and Im not expected to bend the rules, im not saying that you do,but there are some that Expect it.!!!

Good luck with the recruiting anyway, but “if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys”.

That’s fair enough Bikemonkey, so naturally you wouldn’t apply for a job there. I think AJB’s point was about drivers who do take the job knowing what it entails and then moan like buggery or worse when it doesn’t always go at their convenience.
The jibe about monkeys is often valid but not entirely fair in this case, there really are people who prefer to take home a little less to do a job they like.

Thats fair enough, like I say I would love to do the European thing, just would’nt know where to start, and obviously for me there would have to be the money there for me to do it and with 2 young children, being away for possibly weeks on end, would’nt be practical for myself as things are.Im sure many others in the same boat.
but If you take the job on with full knowledge of what it entails, then you should’nt then start crying cause you cant get home I agree. :sunglasses:
I Was’nt trying to have a pop at anyone.
