Passed my test for a car in 1960 at 17. There were no HGV licences then so when I got a job driving a lorry that was all I needed. When HGV’s were introduced, I got one with grandfather rights.
I was a TM in the early 80’s and we decided to put all 12 drivers through their Class 1. I just added my name to the list and after a day in the classroom and a couple in the cab, I passed. So did all the drivers.

Similar with me.
I passed my test driving a 12 ton armoured car in the army in 1962. That gave me a small red driving licence that covered everything. I took another test in 1967 in a tank giving me a group H.(That covers me for bulldozers).
I was a Chieftain driving instructor when I demobbed.
After leaving the military and applying for an HGV job, the guy interviewing me told me that HGV’s were large and dirty? No ■■■■ Sherlock! Told me I didn’t look up to the job!
Since then I have gained every class of HGV by grand father rights, never taken a class 1 test, is 74 too old to think about taking my class 1 ?
