it is but not half as expensive as waking up to a empty tank!! this happend to me on a1 coz ex boss a tight [zb], i know it does go on in services aswell but not half as much risk as laybys ind estates etc.
I don’t buy this argument. With parking at some places costing as much as £15-£20 per night you are going to be financially a lot better off parking in laybys and having your diesel nicked once a month than you are forking out the extortionate prices places charge for parking these days. If you plan your day to ensure you are well down your diesel tank when you park up (I try to ensure I only have 100-150 litres at most) then unless you are having your fuel nicked literally every fortnight then you’re still financially much better off in the laybys. I’ve perhaps been lucky but in 2 years I’ve yet to have any pinched. Admittedly as I’m in the bulk tipping game load security isn’t really an issue though and if I was carrying high value loads in a curtainsider I might think differently.

That depends Paul, if they use the good technique of spiking your tank and when they’re full, they just leave the rest to drain, you’ve got no fuel, need recovery to get you away from where you are and a new tank… that’s an expensive nights parking IMHO, not to mention the poor driver who had to have a ■■■■ in a carrier bag.
Any firm that won’t pay parking, just refuse to do nights out for them, simples. I’m not saying I won’t park at the side of the road or in a layby, sometimes ■■■■ happens, but I won’t plan for it.

I always park on industrial estates, the “■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■” are allergic to street lighting, CCTV cameras and security patrols.

Quick question, I work between 13 and 15 hours a day and I’m away all week. Company won’t pay for parking. I’m quite happy to park in dodgy laybys or ind estates. I do not have time to have a shower during the day. So who else of you have to go to the services have a shower then drive off (usually its quite late by this time) and find parking elsewhere?? And could I ask my company to pay for parking?
Have you ever used one of these, do they heat the water too?? Look a good device and an absolute bargain, I’ve used the ‘solar shower’ in the past, and they’re actually pretty good to be honest - for a black pvc back with a screw valve on them.
Sorry matey. Never used one. I just happened to see them on sale in a car accessory wholesalers that I regularly collect from.

The carrier bag is only required for if you’ve had something dodgy the odds of which are greatly reduced by self-catering in the cab. I’d be more than happy not to pay to park if it’s reflected in better wages and job security, although obviously not always the case.

Thats the way, also look for a gatehouse with 24 hour security, park up outside and go and have a chat with the security guard, that way you may be offered a 24 hour toilet, a kettle (if you dont have your own) and sometimes even a wake up call.
I have always said to the planner something like, right I am loaded now, I am going for a shower and something to eat on the way up, that is the end of that conversation.
I have never had anyone tell me I cannot have a shower

No, you are going to be no better off. Your boss may be, but then again he or she isn’t the one sleeping in a wagon in a layby…!!
No excuse to not pay parking - if the hauliers don’t like the cost, they should take it up with the providers - not punish the drivers!
When ? … every day without fail.
Where ? …at the first available decent place you can, it doesn’t matter if your boss wants you to get that bit further before stopping, ask him to go to bed without being clean, if he doesn’t mind then he’s a dirty pig.

The money still has to come from somewhere to pay for the parking and I’d bet good money it isn’t planner’s wages.

Agreed, but the money for the maintenance, fuel, tax,MOT’s etc has to come from somewhere too. These costs are factored in to the business expenses. Parking isn’t, because the main sufferer with a lack of parking funds available is the driver. And they don’t give a ■■■■ about the driver, let’s face it!!
i still find it absurd that you have to pay for parking in the UK, over here if you can find a spot, its yours, for as long as you need it, for FREE. And showers in truckstops are free.
