When and where to shower?

schrodingers cat:
When your tramping you make your time when you need it simple as.

^^ that.
When we were tramping, we were pushed to keep going, but damned if i would go without a shower, a power nap (on nights) or a meal if i felt like i needed one.
Its not brain surgery, no one will die if you stop for half an hour or so.
If your boss dont like it, just drop your full bottles and tesco carrier bags in the office at the end of the week and ask him to dispose of them for you as there wasnt any bins (or toilets) in the laybys you had to park in. :open_mouth:

I am starting back tramping on euro work next week after a long break, I have told my GF that I wont be showering this week at all so that when I catch the train I wont be the odd one out :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Are there any places which you deliver to often enough that has a shower you can use?

Whats wrong with just having a quick wash of your hands and face in the services or even a petrol station/supermarket with toilet facilities?

Exactly right

When doing euro work during the summer months i make a point of having a shower at least once everyday , although it can sometimes be an easier task because a lot of delivery points will have and allow drivers to use their showers ect, unlike this (zb) hole of a country

But as said make the time to go get your shower/or to eat

The facilities on the continent make a mockery of the ones in this ■■■■■■■■ of a country…and if you cant get a shower in the services there is always the ferries

Can drivers not shower while waiting to be tipped at RDCs or similar places? On a serious note you could have a swim while out tramping ,we as drivers have a duty to look after ourselves.

If i do not have time, you can have a wash in the handicap loos at a garage, and wash the important bits and pieces,or use the shower at a factory.
for £2.50 i thought the showers at junction 38 truckstop on the M6 a tadd too expensive, years ago i would find a spare hose pipe at a garage or factory to wash, whille on euro work,or use a bottle of tap water and wash that way.
Baby wipes are very good too.

I use the public swimming pools, then have a shower after.

If you haven’t worked out how to keep your personal hygiene requirement’s up to scratch by now you need to look for another type of driving job. I cannot believe that there are some people calling themselves professional long distance LGV Driver’s that need to ask this type of question. It truly shows what has happened to the haulage game in a very short period of time, my 11 yr old son knows how to get himself washed & fed after he has been with me on several trips from one end of the country to the other, mind you I’m sure the DCPC will bring these people upto date with all the hidden secrets of long distance driving :unamused: :imp: I despair at this total lack of any kind of insight into an industry that I’ve worked in and loved for over 40yrs.

Quick question, I work between 13 and 15 hours a day and I’m away all week. Company won’t pay for parking. I’m quite happy to park in dodgy laybys or ind estates. I do not have time to have a shower during the day. So who else of you have to go to the services have a shower then drive off (usually its quite late by this time) and find parking elsewhere?? And could I ask my company to pay for parking?

Think this may be of benefit to you.

And it’s [zb] expensive to park!

it is but not half as expensive as waking up to a empty tank!! this happend to me on a1 coz ex boss a tight [zb], i know it does go on in services aswell but not half as much risk as laybys ind estates etc.

I don’t buy this argument. With parking at some places costing as much as £15-£20 per night you are going to be financially a lot better off parking in laybys and having your diesel nicked once a month than you are forking out the extortionate prices places charge for parking these days. If you plan your day to ensure you are well down your diesel tank when you park up (I try to ensure I only have 100-150 litres at most) then unless you are having your fuel nicked literally every fortnight then you’re still financially much better off in the laybys. I’ve perhaps been lucky but in 2 years I’ve yet to have any pinched. Admittedly as I’m in the bulk tipping game load security isn’t really an issue though and if I was carrying high value loads in a curtainsider I might think differently.

I was always told they could claim parking back against tax. not sure if thats correct or not

It is, as a business expense it can be offset against tax, but contrary to popular belief the fact that you can claim something back against tax doesn’t mean you get the whole amount back, it just means you don’t have to pay tax on it.

For example, I’m an owner driver and my business is a limited company. I pay to park somewhere that costs £12 including VAT. Firstly the company claims the VAT back, so that means it has cost £10. This means the company makes £10 less profit than it would have done had I parked in a layby, so the company pays tax on £10 less which at the 20% small companies rate means the tax bill is reduced by £2. So the company has paid out £10 but saved £2 in tax, meaning that actual cost to the business of that £12 parking is £8. So if something is “tax deductible” or can be “claimed back against tax” it doesn’t mean the company gets it for free, it just means they get it a bit cheaper than the actual price paid once tax is taken into account.

i got back to the lorry it was that muggy i was sweating again.

I do hate that on a hot summers day. Having a shower and getting out of it feeling nice and fresh, but by the time you stick your cloths on your sweaty and sticky

Ask at the delivery/collection if they can point you in the direction of their toilet and “you’ve not got a shower I can use have you?” or “I have got time to nip to the shower while you’re loading/tipping me?” Food factories, chemical plants and engineering works are always the good ones to ask at. If you don’t ask…

Have you ever used one of these, do they heat the water too?? Look a good device and an absolute bargain, I’ve used the ‘solar shower’ in the past, and they’re actually pretty good to be honest - for a black pvc back with a screw valve on them.
