What's the speed limit here?

The Enforcer:
“Unless otherwise stated” the national speed limit applies.

No-ones disagreeing about that, but the HGV speed limits are stated in the Road traffic act 1984 and amended in The Motor Vehicles (Variation of Speed Limits) (England and Wales) Regulations 2014.

The Enforcer:
There is a posted limit, where does it say the posted limit must be below 50mph to be in force?

In the context of this thread, if the posted speed limit on a single carriageway road is not less than 50mph it’s irrelevant because it won’t affect the 50mph speed limit for HGV vehiciles as stated in the road traffic act 1984.

I can’t believe that you are all arguing the toss of what is, or what should be, or what your interpretations are !
Its posted “law” in my link.
Just because you are on a “road” not a motorway, and the limit is as per the OP’s picture 60, it is a normal road to which HGV’s are only allowed to do, legally 50

So called “THE UK PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS FORUM (INTERACTIVE)” :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

FTBlunder:
The way I understand it the maximum for an HGV on any single carriageway road is 50 unless signed lower. So even if it says 60 it doesn’t apply as the NSL for HGVs overrides that sign.

One thing a lot of people have told me, and one even claimed to have been pulled and ticketed by a copper for this is that the HGV limit is 10mph less than the posted limit, so 50=40, 40=30 etc. I’m pretty sure this is ■■■■■■■■ but can anyone confirm this? I’ve checked over the gov site and it says nothing about this, so I’m pretty sure its cobblers, but thought I may as well ask here.

May be he meant the copper had given him a ticket for having such a bizarre understanding of the rules

is it true that there is a happy hour on wednesdays between 4:30and 6:15 where lorries over 32t can do roundabouts anticlockwise ?

Fer christ’ sake. I left Engerland in 1974 and only come back now and then and I know it’s 50. Where do you get your drivers from nowadays. :unamused:

Is it April? Seems that a there are a few fools on the loose.

This is what I was told on my lessons years ago. But only if the posted speed is over 40

It’s 50, it’s always fr*****g 50, even on proper dual carraigeways & motorways. Every single road it’s flaming 50 (but that could be cause my truck is limited to 50) sigh - rant over :unamused:

50…

But seeing as there appears to be doubt and argument (no chgange there then) just do 50 on it anyway.

Can’t see that squeezing an extra 6mph out of it is gonna make a whole lot of difference to yer journey time.

Whenever I’m on it, I set 79kph on the cruise and relax.

I have seen it but I’m having trouble believing that so called professional drivers don’t know what the speed limit is. It’s a single carriageway so unless it is posted lower, then the NSL for HGV’s applies which as we all should know is 50 mph on a single carriageway.
I take it these are the same people who think they don’t need the CPC :unamused:

Ok let me see.
5 points for using ‘‘so called professional drivers’’ phrase.

1point for spelling ‘professional’ correctlly.

2 points for mentioning DCPC.

Minus 1 for appearing to defend DCPC as a genuine entity.

If you had said ‘‘Think of the children’’ you would have scored more points on this post.

Must do better next time.

This topic should be pinned to the top of the page, pointed to whenever someone asks why truck drivers are paid a low wage.

Bring on driverless trucks, they will save the human race.

That would have sort of made sense when the NSL for single carriageways was 40 anyway, so even if it said 60 you still couldn’t do more than 40. Doesn’t mean the 10mph drop applies to any limit though, just that 50 as it now is is the absolute maximum, and if the limit says 40, you can drive at 40 like everyone else.

Tbh I do feel a bit of a prick debating this, it seems so obvious, then you get loads of people swearing blind that it isn’t. It’s like arguing whether the sky is blue.

Time to put this cobblers to bed.
2 words,
STREET LIGHTS
Do you see street lights in a 30 limit, residential area?
Yes you do.
You also DONT see 30mph repeaters in a 30 with street lights because it is understood that a lit road is 30 mph UNLESS otherwise posted.
You are seeing repeaters here with 60 boards because there are street lights. The same as you WILL see 40 repeaters in a 40 zone that has street lights.
It is obviously a 50 for HGV’s in OP’s pic, and any vehicle over 2 ton gross weight (commercial), vans, 7.5’s, HGV etc etc.
