It would seem that automated wagons are being discussed more and more, but what is the end goal of all this?
I am aware we have some ’ experts ’ on here, but I am struggling to see the ultimate end game for all this.
Is it to save lives? Reduce congestion? Create jobs?
As with all science, the question isn’t whether we SHOULD do something, it’s whether we COULD.
The mantra that “machines can do everything better/quicker/safer/cheaper” has been repeated so often that it’s become true, consequences be damned.
Funnily enough, I was reading an article that discussed the economic fall out of autonomous trucks. Something that’s been talked about on here for quite a while yet the brainiacs have only just cottoned onto that particular set of pitfalls. Almost makes you want to laugh.

Just don’t get it. Help the Beaver, I insist
Wouldn’t bother your arse about it Beav, despite what the ‘‘experts’’ and alarmists on here tell us, I can’t see it coming in as fully operational in either of our working lives mate.

Do you mean less tax receipts for the treasury mate if fewer drivers are employed?
Simples Mr Beaver.
Only got to look at the knuckle draggers who reckon they “can drive a truck” if it was as Lucy’s post about favourite gearboxes was the only truck avaliable most of em wouldn’t bother or have the know how to even start a truck let alone get out the yard without destroying a gearbox or clutch.
Trucks are doings more of the driving than the driver with Auto this or that,“lane detection warning” wtf is that about so you need a buzzer to go off if you drift out of your lane, don’t you have to look forward anymore?

Just curious about the overall aim of this ’ project ’ Rob.
Maybe I am being a tad thick, but I never see the point in trials if there is no clear objective
Cavey makes a point regarding ’ could ’ vs ’ should ', but if anything that makes me even more curious. I could shove my knob in all different objects, but should I ? (Leave it Dave). Just trying to understand what it is that could be achieved by all this money & effort being spent.

Ah you’re leaning on an open door with this one
Challenge I think, is its not one actual large movement, or project, with goals in mind that everything else triangulates around. That’s the problem, each little project or push has its various (highly questionable at times) reasons for this or that. Theres some really good stuff out there, but a lot of potential problems. But beyond that, no one is watching the whole game. Humans are an excitable, arrogant species and we don’t go into reverse very well . We like labelling anything new as good progress.
If a couple of little green aliens were watching I think they’re be saying “this lot are bonkers. They’re trying to engineer themselves out of everything. Maybe just so they can sit around and “talk” about things all day. They’ve even got a promo film for it. WALL-E”

Do you really believe the treasury will lose out? I’m quite sure they’ll come up with new ways of taxing us. Maybe even dust off the old window tax from a few years ago (Personally, I’d like to see the return of the beard tax).

Sumat like that. There is a story about a car factory owner proudly showing of his new automated assembly line to an economist friend, and boosting that he could have his whole factory automated, and would not need to spend any profits on wages for any human workers at all. His friends response was “who are you going to sell your cars to then?”

The problem with scientists is that they have an ego. They want to be the next Edison, the next Currie, the next Newton. Creating artificial intelligence, and an autonomous robot around it, is their holy grail. The fact that it may spell our doom, is of no concern to their quest to be the next Asimov…
Is it the Government pushing the truck manufacturers to trial all this stuff, or is it ’ anticipation ’ from the truck makers?
Are their tax incentives etc? All these questions are hurting my head
Does anybody listen to the Dr Karl science phone in on 5 live in the early hours. He stated that investing in science and tech gives one of the best returns on investment. Our government missed the boat on liquid crystal technology (developed at my old university). It did however back a winner with dolly the sheep and cloning. Given enough time I could give examples of both missed opportunities and winners.
So, there you have it. Tech companies want to claim grants off governments whilst governments want a share in successful and ground-breaking tech.
So the answer you seek beaver, is it’s all about money. Nothing more and nothing less.

it’s all the hipster millennials fault. They twotter voted automation in.
They want to sit around drinking caffeine free coffee talking about feelings, about how they have taken their right to surgically remove their ■■■ organs and announce they’re not human, but fish, or rocks, or stars, anything they want to be! They drink using their bottoms, because they have a right to use any part of their body to drink you know.
Talk of the conversation is weighty existential items, perhaps, how being offended is offensive and if someone is offended, they’re offending the rights of others to offend. And other such weighty topics, like should Pug dogs be allowed to run for parliament because they look permantly sad and it might cheer them up, and how it’s unjust that sabre tooth tigers are extinct. All the robots do the work, but only 1 hour a week, as no one wants to stress the robots out. No human needs money or food, as it grows on the tree of it’s not fair.
That’s the reasons for automation. Was in the paper last week, did you miss it?
The global warming crew have been on the gravy train for years, this is just another nice little earner for a goodly number of white coats and assorted managers apparatchiks and admin.
There is an end goal, its called milking said gravy train for all its worth.
Remember this beats the hell out of working for a living, no one expects a day when it all pays off, much like the global warming scam so long as someone is putting up the money they’ll trouser it, and come up with highly publicised experiments (that don’t stand up to scrutiny) to keep the money bags fooled that breakthrough into the big time is just around the corner.
Its a self perpetuating scheme, it doesn’t need an end plan, those involved are trousering the plan already.
It’s amazing just how easily these companies and individuals part with the cash too, i’ve seen history repeat itself time and again in my old job, investers pouring millions in being hoodwinked by the same sell it high buy it cheap scam time after time in a groundhog days scenario, you’d think those buggers with the dosh would be clever, the reality is completely the opposite, the ones relieving them of the dosh repeatedly are the clever ones.

I was too busy with my crayons mate I once did ’ dot to dot ’ but got bored with it (ended up deliberately drawing a ■■■■■).
As regards this automation, I can clearly understand the point and the use of tech within your field FD, but with wagons the application is subject to a plethora of limitations/problems.
Just really struggling to see the ’ true ’ agenda of this burgeoning tech

So basically the cynic within me was correct.
It’s just another shiny & dazzling scam for everyone involved to kick the arse out of until the next ponzi scheme arrives?

Don’t mistake me for an enthusiast . I hate the idea of automated cars. It’s bad enough considering all electric. I try not to think about it. But I’m a minority. Most people couldn’t careless
