when i worked on norberts i had the first uk liquid food tank, i picked my new unit up in widnes on the friday ,bob tail home to ramgate then shipped out monday, bob tail to magyar in gray near dijon to pick up my tank on the tuesday (spent most of the day there), then once my tank was finished go down to cabs in lyon and get my hydraulics fitted to the unit on wednesday, all day in lyon then was told run to st vallier, got to norberts st vallier depot about 4pm they put the truck straight in the garage to check it all over, got it back at 7pm only to be told that they did’nt know that the uk had got a liquid food tank so no back load !, was then told to run back to santes (lille) which was the depot that was running the food tanks for friday morning to meet my planner, arrived friday only to be told that they had a load for me on tuesday morning in lille after the factory had inspected and approved the truck.
Unit only from Hull to Felixstowe to pick up a rush job of bananas.
When I was at Hygena we used to have the “Hygena Air Run” that the transport office did to keep the accountants happy.
Empty trailer to Runcorn, swap for another empty up to Stockton, swap for another empty return to Howden.

we had a load run from barcelona to moscow empty several years back. furthest i think i have done is solo to spain pick an empty trailer up and bring it home
Gibraltar to Alicante or Valencia was normal in the 90`s,a whole days drive.

I dropped an empty skip in rainham essex and was given a collection in ashford middlesex. Not mega miles for haulage but for a skip lorry that’s pretty far.
swapped one at oban then got sent to peterhead to swap the other

On Dukes Transport, once tipped cardiff, and was told to reload pet foods melton mowbray

In the late 80’s when I worked night shift for Swifts we ran out of empty trailers at Duston, Northampton. They sent me solo to Stroud, Gloucestershire to get one but they didn’t have one so then I went from there to Maidstone, Kent for one but they didn’t have any either so I then went back to Duston solo

Ipswich to Le Havre I, s’pose, to pick up a 40’ box for Stoke.
Harry,do you mean BEFORE they built that horrid national one road,but both roads would be all day,the driving was terrible,over taking on blind corners,old trucks doing 20 kmh,donkeys and chickens on the road along with wild dogs.
I would run the toll road for free,and drive through the Via Verde,as long as no coppers were on the peage.
