A lot of the tales on this thread are the result of incompetence, but there are also a lot of people running vast distances empty as part of their usual business.
I’ve done a few of both, but the special hurry up jobs are the best, like running down to Passau, Germany with an empty tilt to load a box that would’ve fit on the top bunk and run it to Silverstone for a display by Audi, it was obviously very important, but not that important that it was forgotten about until the last minute 
Now we regularly run bobtail to Indiana to collect new trailers, that’s an easy 1000miles every time 
Empty Telford to Rome - loaded empty stillages back the contract said that on that day a truck would go from A-B, load empties and return so no matter what, that truck ran. My planner agreed it was daft , but said the penalty clauses in the contract if the run was not done outweighes the costs of sending me down empty

As far as runs between postcodes go, W1 to E1 isn’t too bad, nor NW1 to SE1, and EC1 to WC1 is an absolute doddle. 
Now compare that to a fresh-air run from NE1 to SW1 to pick up “removals”…
Doesn’t sound far until you call it a round trip to Downing Street and back to the Barrack Road Business school in toon centre!

I very, very, very rarely gat a backhaul so I run empty back to NYC every time, even Buffalo to the Big Apple empty which is 450 miles along the NY thruway.
We have had drivers run from Boston MA to Chicago IL empty for the next load.
