Whats the exchange rate like in Romania

anyone been and know please

We came through Romania last month and the exchange rate was about New Lue (RON) 5 to the £ sterling.

They are phasing out the old currency the Lue (ROL).

The best site for up-to-date currency exchange info (including Romania) is http://www.xe.com.

Best places to exchange money is on the borders, don’t bother with passport or receipt you will get a good rate that way, avoid at all costs blackmarket money dealers at the border crossings, you will get ripped off, also better rate if you use euro, tho as you are UK based this is not so good as you may be going from sterling to euro, the above info is 6months old as ive stoped going down there, but don’t recon its changed that much.

Cheers Harry

Steve are you saying take EUROS and exchange those on the border mate

thecoder0 Think of Romania as Disneyland and you wont go far wrong.... the last time I was there a cop in Bucarest tried to fine me $1 for stopping and asking if I could get under the low bridges. Said I was in the wrong part of town. I didnt pay him. When you are in the towns watch out for branches sticking out from the middle of the road. They are there to warn you that the manhole cover is missing. ( & they are big ones ) The locals nick `em for scrap iron… I loved the place… Good luck with your trip…Its a long way.

As ever appreciated cheers Harry

gonna try and do a diary …its a voluntary gig aid convoy so might need some advice on getting the pics on…its a two week trip so should be good

Will do this in two parts just to give you a general idea of the distance…

If you are running from UK and starting with sterling then maybe not as you will be changing sterling to euros at start of trip, my running money was always in euros so the less times you convert the better it is. Which border were you going to cross into rumo? Some are ok a few are very bad, even running with red cross or what ever its all the same to the rumos

That makes about 1500 miles from Calais to Bucarest… This is the best time of the year to go… Don`t forget your camera…

Gonna need the bulldog spirit by the looks of that Harry.

Thanks for that.

This trip as I say is my first time off the island but without going into detail could shape the rest of my working /personal life

thanks again mate

Dave

Yeah its an interesting place to go, I spent the best part of last year either unloading there or transiting it, Scary place to drive at night, nearly hit a horse and cart up the arse coming ot of Bucharest about 1am on a motorway one morning. They dig the road up and put no markings out, very scary when you nearly go down a 2m hole in the road, nice food, cheap drink, no problems parking, not like this country, were everyone under 5 is given a stanley knife. Crap drivers and an even worse road system, if you have any loose fillings get your dentist to sort em out before you go, as you havent seen bad roads untill you get to Romania

As an aside we used to try an avoid driving after dark as it was not safe, unless you had to, it once took me over 5 hours to drive less than 80km most of which was in low range as the road was so bad, and that was in daylight with only seeing a few other vehicles on the road

My first time there I drove at night . The problem is the horse & carts with no lights. The drivers get drunk then lay down & sleep in the back while the horse finds its way home. You really need those spotlights on top of the cab roof. I went thru this village at night & part of the road traffic consisted of these two guys pushing a barrow load of gravel with no wheels. It had shafts back & front with straps to go over the shoulders. They picked it up & walked with it. I had to go behind this vehicle until it was wide enough to pass…
A friend of mine who did Rom regularly got low on diesel in daylight hours parked on a railway crossing until the train came then did a cash deal with the driver for diesel

Heard that one a few times.!!

Im with Bob on another posting about this, Why is someone organising an aid convoy to Romania? In January they will have all the aid they need from the EU, Is it some kind of ego trip? like going to Bulgaria with a load of bullets and no common sense :stuck_out_tongue:

Why not send this aid to somewhere that it is needed like Africa where children are dying because they cannot get clean drinking water, or if you want to be on the telly, do a charity trip to Albania or Iraq
