we used to go zeebrugge…aachen…dortmund…bochum…frankfurt…through east germany…cross the border at cheb…stop at the cheb hotel…cross czech via prague…brno…cross into hungary via raika… down to budapest…cross the border into romania via szged…also via the containers…and the windmill first…for ■■■■ up…then drive via sibiu…pitesti to bucharest…and onwards…
dont follow maps from people who have never been…
East Germany is not there anymore . You got the Chzec Rebublic & Slovakia these days. It might be wise to consult a map. Things have changed since you were there. I have been.
The first time was about 30 years ago ,up til about 10 years ago.You know nuffing ,you. See you outside… Bring your gob with you…

It certainly is Harry, I was parked in Magdeburg just two nights ago…but I know what you mean. However, the old East Germany was not the same as the new Czech and Slovak Republics- they were Czechoslovakia.
Incidentally if you are heading homewards, there are two autohofs at Madge, park at the second one. You have to take a ticket at the barrier , but parking is free if you eat in the restaurant or buy anything from the shop. The eastern Europeans park at the other one because it is free so it gets filled up very quickly, plus its a fair way from the autobahn.
Cie la vie ,like the old days…
The shortest way is; Belgium, Germany ,Austria,Yugoslavia ,Romania. But with all the wars & politickin` the routes changed over the years. The first time I went I came back from Italy & changed trailers at The Bakehouse, just out side Macon. I then went France ,Italy .Crossed at Trieste /Yugo & down to Romania.
if you decide to go via Hungary or Austria ,be sure that you havespread your load correctly,The Austrians HAVE roadside weighbridges at their vehicle checkpoints, and in Hungary they are still checking the axle weights and you will get done if the axle is over ,also in Hungary do not forget the vingette
(look at useful posts forum there is a site for Hungary),and when useing the roads by Budapest becareful they are up to date withthe latest in RADAR, and
LASER pistols for catching speeding vehicles,ALSO TRY TO HAVEENOUGH DIESIL to get through Hungary AS its expensive, fill up in Austria,
also the 200 liter rule will be in use that is when you leave the EU borders and when you return ,you are only allowed 200 liters in the tank,
The Austrians do check as for Hungary it may be that you can get away with it but that dependson how they work at the border,
if GOING THROUGH AUSTRIA you will need a GO:box you can get this at the border at PASSAU/SUBEN make sure that you know how to useit and that
you have(1),switched it on-(2.) put enough money on to pay for the mileage you do onthe motorway, ( ABOUT 27cents a km)
if you are starting off with a fresh card from the docks a good place to aim for is the truckdstop GIEISLIWIND-- ON the A3 between WURZBURG --------
NURENBURG this is also a place to ask other drivers what the roads are like
and if there are any problems ahead,
You`re right, its not practical these days… But thats as the crow flies… It would probably take you longer than Czech, Hungary…
england belgium germany austria hungary then romania when i used to run to Sibiu, used to cross at deutschkreutz then at nadlac arad then sibiu
