Seeing all these post asking what ppm such and such are paying, i was wondering what is the best rate or job that you guys have eveMy work divides between blindingly outragously fantastic, to absolutely embarrassing… lets here it all…
i charged £200 for 30 miles about 3 years ago.
Well, one of the worst jobs is, we had a customer who had a load to be collected from spain, a weeks notice, gave a reasonable rate back thinking i will get a tidy export load, couldnt get an export load, so went out empty to collect the load, which then got cancelled whilst i was en route, couldnt get a reasonable load back as was holiday time waited four days then gave up, so ended up round tripping to castellon , and back for £1250, minus ferries, thats was one of me worst, but theres been a few…
but on the flip side, we do oversize work, i delivered a big silo to a site, and the concrete wasnt ready, so they unloaded it on the other side of the site, a month later i went up with another silo, and delivered that to the concrete base, they then said go over and pick up the other tank, to which i replied, i dont have an order for that job,…So half an hour later , one order number for £400, to collect a silo, and deliver it half a mile, then unload it, that, to my reckonin is £800 permile, seeing as i was already there.Thats my record(by the way, once in 23 yrs), can anyone beat that, surely someone can !Gives ya hope dont it!
One that stays with me was collecting equipment from Schiphol and taking it to the RAI, Amsterdam a 30 mile round trip. We were already at the RAI with another load, £900 later, its all sorted. Mind you it was a bit like a sting operation, empty warehouse on the outskirts of the airport, the only thing there was a pile of high-spec professional screens just flown in from the states, in the middle of this huge building …

was that per head ?
boat journey included in the price ?
Had a job muckshifting about 6 years ago. £30 a load for a 6mile round trip, we were so quick we were taking extra long dinners so as not to take the ■■■■. We were doing anything from 12-15 per day. 3 weeks work and we were only loaded downhill too.
I did have a day out the quarry about a year ago.
Leave yard 7am.
Pick up load for tar plant (£30)
Load tar for a job 0.5m from my yard (£80)
4.5hrs handlay (£135)
Tipped leftovers in yard (£20 from farmer).
Earned £265
Fuel £40 max
Home in house for 2pm.
Strange isnt it, one day you could do a load , say to manchester, and it all comes together, for a good customer, all goes to plan, tipped easy, got a decent backload on and gone, next day you take on another job to ,manchester, bit less of a rate, not such a good customer, evrything goes to rat ■■■■, you cant get a decent backload, take a backload, cos its all you can get to a place 50 miles away , on the wrong side of your yard, and wondered why you bothered, got to be in it to win it i guess.
In 1996, as an employee on PAYE, I once earned £995 after stoppages for four days work… I said to my boss “FFS Neil, you could have made it up to a grand”.

Four years ago, i was buying 50k motors over the phone cos, we was earning plenty, and didnt think nothing of it, today i have to recut tyres …
Best I ever had was taking rubble out the King whoever docks in North Woolwich, the rate wasn’t great, but seeing as though we were loading on one side and then shooting it up into the dock just out of site of the portakabins around the corner it never mattered, we ended up raising the waterline in the dock by a couple of feet before we finished that job
Worst was a round trip to Italy with no ferries, loaded Manchester, tipped Milan, reloaded Como for a milk round all over Manchester, firm went skint and I got SFA for the job
King George vl dock
Doing muck from battersea was getting £240 a load and the muck tip was £65. As they dug down they came across clean ballast do we got £240 a load plus selling the ballast for £6 a ton.
Yes, i can relate to that, had way too many of them over the years…, i me the italy ending up with sfa…en
