What's the average hourly rate and average hours class C?

Hello
This is my first post…

Iv decided to get my category C (class2) as i want to get out of my Security job and drive for a living. iv just had my medical and sent off for my provisional and i am curious as to what to expect in terms of average hourly rates and average weekly hours…

am i correct in thinking that most jobs are around the £10ph rate and probably averaging around 45hours per week in the Greater Manchester area?

Thanks

While I have no knowledge of pay in Greater Manchester, I’d be surprised if you only averaged 45 hours AT work a week, but you might well find a job where your working time is 45 hours per week average or even less.

What makes you think the jobs pay £10 per hour and average 45 hours a week?

Just from what i have seen advertised doing a quick search, am i way out?

Thanks

Maybe not on the pay. But probably on the hours.

To give you an idea, I’ve averaged 53 hours AT work over the last year. But my hours for WTD purposes, are hanging around 42 hours averaged over the same time.

Pay is regional, and also dependant on the type of work you are doing, and how much load interaction you have, so my wage in Hertfordshire, is unlikely to be of any useful comparison.

You could legally do 82 every week or 144 if sleeping in truck

Thanks for your replies guys… Working more than 45hrs per week is what i want in my next job… Im currently work 48hrs per week at £7.20ph and was just wanting to know what to expect from my Class 2 job and want to make sure i will be much better off etc after paying all the money out to get my licence…

Thanks

I’ve limped for over a year as a day man on agency, and would guess that I’ve averaged about 60 hours a week (plus travelling to and from work). So as others have said, 45 hours a week is a bit low and overtime isn’t really optional in this game. I’ve currently got a cold (man flu) and had to do a 13.5 hour day today as that’s what was needed of me…

As for money, you’ll need to speak to people local and ensure you ask whether that rate is PAYE or self-employed.
(Agency’s will normally advertise self-employed as it’s higher and initially seems more attractive…)

Most class 2 jobs in Gtr Manchester average 9.50 but I got in at £10ph for first job where I could hardly pick and choose. I’m averaging 46 hours of actual work, + 45- 1hr break per day.

£16 a week of my wage comes out my wage to pay umbrella company which is rediculous and frustrating but as I say can’t pick and choose when starting out.

Currently taking home between 330 and 370 depending on overtime , after tax. Need to get on the artics or even HIAB/moffett to get higher than 10 quid hr round here it seems

Currently getting 10.75 an hour in Trafford Park first shift today was a few hours longer than expected at 13 hours.

And I was only driving a 7.5 tonner

Depends on whether you are looking for agency work or full time employed as well.

In West Yorkshire you would be lucky to get £8.50 per hour as a new driver, full time employed on class 2. In fact you would be lucky to get that on class 1, again as a new driver.

I dont want to give up my permanent job for a temporary Agency job… so the plan is to register with an Agency and do 1 or 2 driving jobs a week on my days off if i can to gain some experience before finding a permanent job that i can leave my current full-time job for… Thats the plan anyway lol…

Food service (Brakes, 3663, P&H) or Builders Merchants (Jewson etc) may be what you need to look at.

These jobs are generally mocked a little on here (i’ll let you search that) but pay pretty good money, nearly 30k at 3663.

In a lot of areas these jobs are quite easy to come by, in West Yorkshire (which isn’t a million miles from Greater Manchester) they aren’t

And just in case the above comes across as being negative i’m certainly not trying to do that, just being realistic.

There are companies willing to take you on as a new driver but £10 per hour, full time employed in the North of England as a new pass is pie in the sky.

Thanks for those suggestions, all those companies have RDC/Branches close to me and i will look into those

Get in with one of these and you’ll not only earn a good wage but your driving skills will be pushed to the max making you a better driver in the process and it looks good on your CV if you’ve worked for one of the food places. People will take you on if you have themade on your CV because the nature of the job.

Which will either make you or break you. Did me the world of good. Got no issues reversing a class 2 truck anywhere now even at my Derby depot where most the drivers struggle cause of how tight it is and I just slide it in with ease.

Really can’t beat that experience.

Just take note mind that these jobs are hard physical graft. At Palmer and Harveys your lugging upto 9 tonne of food into places and then handballing it out of cages. Some places you can’t even take the cage in the shop so your handballing it from one place to another.

You might thrive off it, you’ll defo go home knackered but get fit in the process.

Don’t rush to meet the deadlines as well as a new driver. Take your time and do it safely.

Stick it out for 3-6 months and see where you wanna go with it.

I did 5h overtime one month at Palmer and Harvey and came out with £1933 after tax. If I lived closer to Coventry rather then being in Leicester I reckon I’d have stayed longer and did more hours.
