Admitting you have a linear for cb use, is a sure way to get Ofcom to give you a visit.

If you need to use a linear, then get your ham ticket where you can use one legally.

What’s a CB?.. Lol

Do people still use these?

Great little radio…how much is it ?

you could try a president lincoln comes in a nice pine box apparently …

Doesn’t matter how good the CB is, if your aerial is ■■■■.
Good aerial, with good swr, will make a cheap radio sound as good as an expensive one.

This. Install the antenna properly and it’ll slaughter any badly installed antenna no matter what linear you put on it.

My mate had a truck with a crap antenna installation - magmount on the back of the cab, right angle adapter and a modulator on it half masked by the cab. Needed 100W to get 4 miles up the M18 from J4 to MSA and couldn’t hear anyone more than a few miles away. In contrast another mate and myself could talk well over 20 miles with just 4W - Sirio 3000 on mine, Sirio 5000 on his both installed by hole drilled in the roof.

I bought a Midland in '99 and it’s still working

I use a York JCB 863. Made in the early 80’s.

And out perform it every time.

The ideal position is on the top of the cab roof in the centre but unfortunately today’s tall cabs don’t make this very practical.

The most critical part of an an aerial, other than a good SWR, is to ensure the coil is not masked by a vertical metal surface that will reflect back. I’ve seen loads of aerial installs with mag mounts on the back of the cab and even factory installs such as DAF or Scania toplines and the coil is sat right next to a vertical cab panel. It will receive but you’ll struggle to get out over any distance.

Years ago when I drive 8 wheel tippers I used to setup most of the CBs for the lads. Using a mag mount in the centre of the cab roof with the longer version of a stinger they were all good for 5+ miles even with a cheap, basic radio. On the work we were doing the aerials would often end up bent like snakes but kept on performing. Also don’t believe any of this “pre SWRd” crap. You can use then straight from the box without blowing your radio but a little time setting them up properly will make all the difference.
