What would you do?

Well the consensus is to ignore it, which is what I had planned all along, I’ve seen plenty of Brit drivers filling their jerry cans in calais and even in the UK. The only reason I brought it up was because the guy was wearing Royal Mail uniform so wasn;t that conspicuous .

What I would do (and I done once) I would call the police to tell that I witnessed it but I do not want to report theft. But in case that theft will be reported by the owner of the truck, I can confirm what I saw.

They thanked me, took my personal data off me and I never heard about it again, so no harm for me, but if the owner would like to chase the thiev, I would be there to help.

your report will be 3rd party information so they wouldn’t take a report of theft from you unless you say the fuel is yours

That’s my point. So when the owner of fuel don’t bother, I have no reason to be bothered as well. But when the owner of the fuel reports theft, they have my report to help find the thief.

Ah, so if I see that somebody is stealing your car and I call police, they won’t be interested, because car is not mine?

He was probably off to the sorting office to steam open envelopes

If there was a phone number on the cab i’d be ringing it just to make the company aware of what’s going on. At the end of they day if someone was siphoning diesel from YOUR wagon, you would surely expect a decent human being to report it either to you or the police. You can’t go on with the “it’s not my problem” attitude. They are in the wrong and you, for reporting it, are in the right.

I bought a diesel car for our holiday. 1st time I drove into the yard, my gaffer says…“I better watch my diesel now then” and walks off. I was miffed but let it pass.
Never been tempted, no matter how easy it would be.

If you’re quite pally and/or good mates then I’d take that in the tongue-in-cheek way it was most likely intended, but if the gaffer is someone you barely ever speak to then I’d have had a few words of my own to say to him in reply to that… :imp:

At my last fully-employed job (now self-employed), I used to get my fuel payed to and from the yard

After about a year I went and bought a little diesel car just for banging up and down the motorway, and leaving parked in the yard for upto 2 weeks at a time. Anyway, boss came over to me one day and says “to save all the buggering about with putting your personal milage on your time sheet, just fill you car up from the yard pump once a month”

Anyway, one of the other drivers saw me filling up late one night, and called the boss, saying I was nicking diesel.

Fair enough I thought, but the thing was, he wasn’t in possesion of any of the facts at the time

There you go. A perfect example of why busybodies should keep their fat beaks out of other people’s business.

what i mean is that they will not take a crime report ie, raising a crime etc etc etc with all the paperwork.

if you rang up about my car being taken, yes they will be interested

Maybe he was a cleptomaniac owner driver and was stealing from himself

I would have asked him for some!! :smiling_imp:

Yeah, so it’s right. If I see someone stealing the diesel from you, I can report that to the police, but they won’t start anything unless you report the crime. So if you allowed that guy to have some diesel from you, no harm done, but if you wish to caught him, I am there to help you.

Or you finally got that I am talking about it from the first place :grimacing:

i think we both lost the plot lol

A member of the Public rang our firm last year. This lady said that she had seen one of our drivers meet an accomplice at a local MSA.

Some diesel was stolen from our truck and the accomplice took it away. This Lady failed to notice the registration number of our truck or the other car so her infomation was useless.

Except that, we all fell under suspicion and the boss started checking MPG figures in person.

Oddly, a particular driver left a few months later and the boss stopped sending us silly texts about where we can and cannot fuel up.
