What would you do if 'told' to load your own trailer?

gnasty gnome:

newmercman:
It’s all in the job title, if I’m a lorry driver then I drive lorries, if I’m a lorry loader/unloader then I load/unload them, simple…

All this pumping pallets up & down trailers is disgraceful, not only do companies use your trailer as free storage while you sit waiting in their yard for 3 or 4hrs, they also expect you to ■■■■■ their wage bills by loading/unloading the thing too, it’s all wrong, there may be a job shortage at the moment, but that doesn’t mean you have to be exploited

You wouldn’t like my job then. Went out with 13 ton on today, 10 ton offloaded by hand; individual 25kg bags of sheep feed. Pallet trucks aren’t an option (hill farms are not noted for their level concrete yards  ) and few of these farms have tractors big enough to handle a 1-ton front-loader.

I always thought that people who only did driving were chauffeurs.

On the contrary, if I went for a job on a rigid or multi drop hanging garments for example then I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but if I was ‘just’ a driver then driving is all I would do

and lets face it, many “modern” so called truck drivers, that’s all they want to do.
Can’t see many of them sheeting & roping a load in a rain storm.
Blimey, they even complain now if the radio don’t work!

wrecktech100:
hmmm…normally i’d tell them ■■■■■■■■ as i’m a mechanic not a loader.

when i was on the spanners it was a regular accurance for office staff to come in the workshop and were in a bit of trouble sos and so running late will you go to a market or to the lairage to load a livestock box this was so common used to keep overtrousers and wellies in the locker, also for a while we had a job out of a cycle factory in bangor were they were stored in the yard and then redistibuted sometime i’d do 3 trips a day from ruthin to bangor and back even though it was drop trailer and pick another one still wasnt my job but just did as i was told.

A tolal turn around year before last when i took my truck back to the yard one sunday dinner time after tipping and reloading it got back to the yard and proceded to change the wheels on the drive axle( tyres were bald). lost count of the spare wheels ive fitted on the road( we got paid extra) and sussies changed air leaks fixed etc never called scania out once even when i had big hole in the airbag i still drove it 60ish km to the nearest dealer

I’ve just finished at a job that had me sheeting up or tarping as it’s called over here, I left it because it was a crap job though, nothing to do with the sheeting, I peversely enjoy sheeting a load, I also have a proper gearbox so please do not refer to me as ‘modern’, I’m old skool dude

Here’s an example of a nicely sheeted load for you ‘modern’ drivers :unamused:

Mind you I much prefer my current fridge :sunglasses:

Exactly. And they wonder why jobs are paying £6.50 per hour!

Well he got away with it with an offer of a permanent job
He does genuinely have a bad shoulder from brewery days and told our gaffa in london that had the canadian not come on the phone demanding that he did as he was told he might of thought about it and our gaffa knows said canadian and knows what a nob he is so said we’ll forget it this time. He has done loads of favours for them in the past and the canadian is trying to get him the sack so we all agree next time they see each other a nice friendly smile and wink will be much more productive in winding him up then starting an arguement
I have the job of taking this stupid load back today on my own and have been told its their job to unload me when I get there so its gonna be interesting as I aint unloading 9k all on me todd :stuck_out_tongue:

Aren’t ALDI and LIDL RDC’s self tip anymore, they certainly used to be. I was never happy about it (just the same as not being happy about sheeting a load at the end of a 15 hour shift at 2 in the morning in the rain) BUT somtimes it is part of the job. At Murfitts we used to load pasta in Italy in a step frame TILT and whilst they loaded the driver had to build a second deck with heavy (and dirty) steel bars, a royal pain in the arse, especially in 30-40C.

If they tell me to unload I will go down the route of A. Im not insured to work in your warehouse, B. I have never been trained in the use of the rail system or the bars which lie across the back of the trailer.
So then I will ask if an accident occurs who will be libal? Because surely on both accounts it breaches health and safety? And then I will have them sign a written statement saying the above and that they’re happy for me to carry on unlawfully :stuck_out_tongue:
If its incorrect I may well just get in and be very very slow and count that 14 quid an hour over time down on every garment

What M, no X at the front? :open_mouth: :open_mouth:
Bet you ain’t got a Dundee ■■ at the back either.

You can stick your frigo though, nasty noisy things. :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:
I’d sooner rope (or strap) and sheet in the rain any day than spend all night with that start/stop racket.

newmercman, i wasn’t intending to refer to you specifically. I was just picking up on your quote. Sorry if i didn’t make that clear.

i got a load of beer once for lidil once in swindon if i remember right.got ther on time went in to hand in my paper work.they asked me if i had training on a power stand on pallet truck.i said no i had not and why they had asked me this.they told me i had to unload myself they did not do it at all.well i turned round and said well looks like its going back.they said why.i told them i drive deliver thats all and load it if its a curtian sider for side loading or off loading which my trl was.
they said all drivers at our place unload when asked i said no they do not we are not insured for it and will not do it at all.if we had a accident on their premise we where not covered and could not claim.so asked for my papers rang the boss told what they wanted us to do he said take the papers back in see if they would unload it themselfs in 30 minutes if not ring him and bring it straight back to manchester.went in told them what option they had waited 30mins nothing done pull off shut up back to manchester with 28ton of beer lost that day for them.it went back to the brewry.they said they did it a lot and mst drivers would not touch it at all when they found out they had to unload it.we never did that job again ever or any other place like it
