What was this trucker thinking ?!

Solly:
C/F, this is getting out of all proportion. I’m not saying the video maker was innocent in all this but why are you and others so obsessed with the tailgating aspect of all this. As has been pointed out, if they are tailgating on the main carriageway in front of the maniac wagon driver, it’s a knocking bet they were behind also.
The Road Markings statutes and common sense tell every driver everything they need to do whether they are travelling at 5km or 90km. Who in their right mind would approach the main carriageway at 90kms when there is nowhere to go as that maniac did? When there is nowhere to go on the main carriageway you slow down and give way. Correct?

What about the near fatalities also shown on the video?

The reason why I’m ‘obsessed’ with the tailgating aspect on the approach to slip roads is that in addition to all the other safety issues related to that situation it blocks merging traffic.IE there’s a big difference between traffic on entry slip roads giving way to vehicles in lane 1 which all have plenty of seperation distance between them then zip merging correctly into the gaps.As opposed to that traffic in lane 1 all tailgating thereby removing the gaps and blocking the merging of traffic from the entry slip roads as in this case.

As I’ve said the ‘maniac’ in this case was the driver who was tailgating with the stated aim of blocking merging traffic from the entry slip road. The truck driver just made the simple mistake of dealing with that situation in the wrong way by prioritising the need to merge at a decent speed to minimise the speed differential as opposed to just slowing up to a crawl on the slip road thereby creating a massive speed differential between traffic on the motorway and the entering vehicle which then just creates another type of danger. In either case the fact is the truck driver was forced into a dangerous situation, whatever choice he made,by at least one tail gating zb,and probably others in lane 1,with the stated aim of blocking the safe merging of traffic from a slip road.

Which is why we need a change in the rules of the road from one of traffic having to give way at entry slip roads to one of zip merging applies.Because it’s obvious that some drivers are taking the idea of having the priority in lane 1 to unrealistic extremes by thinking that they provide an excuse for deliberate blocking of merging traffic by way of tail gating across entry slip roads. With inevitable results of vehicles running into the hard shoulder or having to enter motorways from a crawl or standstill.Although the current rules probably effectively provide for that anyway.Which,as I’ve said, probably explains why the idiot who made the video has deleted it. :bulb:
