Hiya…don’t knock joeshell… the 88’s was a step in the right direction but far from a good machine
its just as everything was not so good…no one will have a good word to say about the wipers on
a 88…the bunk was only their it was not brill. and the brakes… get out of a 88 and into a foden
you’d press the brake and go through the screen…I agree the’re a icon in trucking but they had faults.

I drove a couple of 88’s in the late 70’s but my usual motor was a Borderer (180’s then moved up to 220 ■■■■■■■■■ what I would have liked was the 88 cab on the ■■■■■■■ Borderer, I agree with 3300John, the 88 brakes used to put the fear of God up me and the wipers were a joke, but I have never disliked anything as much as Mercs.

I had a F88 290 new in 77 on a “S” plate and it was a Volvo test wagon but they would not say what at Volvo’s but the brakes were fine on it and it would out pull a 140 but it was good on juice as well 8 mpg I had it nearly 4 years and it always had to go into Volvo’s around every 6 months they would have friday dinner until monday dinner and that was the only time it was off the road barring M O T s. I can’t recall any problems with the wipers either but as the F 10 came out shortly after it could have had a few trial bits on.

I can only think of a 6 wheel Mastiff which I did not like but I only had it for half a day and 2 wagons which I liked were the 88 and the viewline as neither let me down and I drove them both for around 4 years and at the time they were as good as anything for the job I was doing.
cheers Johnnie

1625 merc and any iveco

Ford cargo and renault 290

The six-wheeler Iveco Stralis I drove on Friday. I thought that Ivecos must have got better since the cargo but i was wrong, I could have removed the gearbox and stripped it down by the time the auto box changed.

Mercedes Atego 6wheeler tipper 05 reg, 280 with straight 8 speed box, Awful heap of ■■■. I liked the Axor though :open_mouth: . Moxy dumptrucks of any kind; backbreakers in comparisson to Volvo and Terex offerings.
My Dad would nominate Bedford TM and Leyland Constructor and we’d both just about vote for Daf cabbed Fodens.

Henry Longs had quite a few of those 1418s i was too young to drive em but my brother had 1 and i remember they were very slow up the hills much like most Mercs from the 70s and 80`s

Very very easy.A Merc 1626 or maybe it was a 1628.
I had just got the 142 and another OD buddy with the Mercedes stopped together at Farthing Corner for a cuppa.
He begged to run my Scania down to Dover while I took his Merc.
Well, there is a first time for everything.Even driving a Mercedes.
He was down the slip road like a rat up a drain pipe.
Me,I lost the will to live climbing Boughton by pass.
Needless to say he got an earfull in the Greasy spoon when I eventually got there.
My love affair still continues to this day.Drove an new Mercedes with that wait a week gear shift.
I thought it was in drive, off with the hand brake and the goddam thing stated to roll BACKWARDS on a flat piece of
tarmac!!!

My thoughts entirely John, brakes could turn you grey in a shift, and the wipers were reminiscent of a nineteen fifties Ford Pop,and, unusually i suppose, ours had day-cabs

Agree with Mercs,might make a good car,but the wagons are ■■■■■■■■■■■ an Actros for DHL,and an Axor for Guinness,that was even worse!lousy slap-over gearbox,rough ride,lousy electrics,■■■■■

I nearly had to apologise for being unkind to Mercedes, because although I have never liked Mercs for various reasons, I had blanked from my my mind that I have driven 21 of these horrible things, some for 1 shift, the SRM contract motor for 2 weeks etc. All I can say in their favour is they had good brakes, but if you hit a speed bump a little too fast you got parts of the overhead dash in your face!!
