What setup and why?

If you were given a load of cash to set up as an owner driver what combination of vehicle would you get and why?

Wouldn’t do it, as theres no money in transport apparently.

Ken.

The only way to make a small fortune in haulage is to start with a large one!

lol It’s our lasses pet name for me

I’d buy a set of vintage Dinky toys in their original boxes, then sit back and look at them for a few years. There’s more chance of them making money than the real thing.

I’ve had the money, set fire to it, the agony isn’t so prolonged .

I would have to do what our MPs do, and go on a jaunt, so a month in Miami should do it, then when i return, decide that an american truck is the way to go, Big Cab, on board generator, toilet/shower, a nice big ■■■■■■■ engine, but practically, that wouldnt work, cos vosa would demand too many changes. So i would have to look at other Options, so it would be off to Holland for a month, yeah, that ought to do it, so id settle for a big engined SSC DAF, possibly with an extended cab, both length and height, and a nice smart German fridge, but i doubt there`d be enough money left, after my jaunts, and the finance bods would be on my case. So all in all, i would be out of pocket before i started, which just about sums up the haulage industry anyway. :stuck_out_tongue:

if i put it on here then everyome would be doing it then it wouldnt be so niche would it

and to the neh sayers theres money in it you just gotta know where to look :stuck_out_tongue:

If it were a load of cash then probably a W&D with demountable bodies and a range of bodies available. That way you can turn your hand to most jobs.

I’d bank most of the cash, spend maybe 8-10 grand on an old Bedford horsebox converted to a living van. Then I’d selll my house and live in the van, and never work again.
Sod running my own haulage business, I have no business sense and prefer to let someone else take all the risks.

OK, I am an owner driver so had to ask myself this question when I started up, 18 months ago.

I have an 08-reg 6x2 euro 5 Renault Magnum 500DXi, and here’s why.

From the outset, the bulk of my work would be traction only, pulling the customer’s trailers, so all I needed was a tractor unit. I needed a 6x2 because the bulk of the work is maximum weight, and for that reason, and the fact that much of the work is over hilly terrain I also chose something with a slightly higher than average horsepower rating.

Because I’m based in the south-east I needed something that was LEZ compliant but chose a euro 5 instead of euro 4 because I thought it likely that euro 4 might cease to be LEZ compliant during my ownership of the truck. Euro 5 will be LEZ compliant until 2020.

Apart from needing to earn money, the cab was also going to be my home for 5/6 days a week for four years or so, so I wanted something spacious. I looked into Globetrotters, Topliners, Super Space Cabs etc, but a Renault Magnum is far cheaper to buy than any of these.

I paid £25,000 for my truck, at the time Volvo FH13s of the same age and mileage were around £42,000, and a Renault Magnum is simply an FH13 with a better cab anyway. Additionally there is a Renault dealership in my operating centre so all of the maintenance is carried out at weekends- I have not had one single day on downtime this year.

Like anyone else in my position, 18 months into it, I’ve got some things right and some things wrong, but I will say that I still think my choice of truck was spot-on.

That may be the idiot who keeps setting up the fake Facebook pages, but if he has actually set up a Limited Company “for a laugh” online, then he will soon get fed up with the penalty notices from HMRC for failing to comply with Limited Company legislation and wish he had never done it.

Pretty much this set up.

I’d long ago thought that this sort of thing would be a good flexible outfit, a few years ago I saw this for the first time and was quite jealous.

That’s got a bigger crane than mine so less payload, but with the triaxle drawbar you could still carry a heavier single load than I can now. It’s specialist work but very flexible in the variety of work available.

I’ve looked into this a bit further, and it’s a tad confusing. Firstly we have…

HARRY MONK TRANSPORT LIMITED is a Private Limited Company registered in United Kingdom with the Company reg no 08062158. Its current trading status is “live”. It was registered 2012-05-09. It has declared SIC or NACE codes as “None Supplied”. It can be contacted at 64 Derwent Close, Rugby, Warwickshire, United Kingdom .

And then we have…

Harry Monk Transport Ltd
1 Chartwell Rd, Kingsnorth, Ashford, Kent, TN25 7BF
Tel: 07824 154037
About us

Courier and light haulage service for the uk and europe

Courier and light haulage service for the uk and Europe, cmr, public liability and goods in transit insurance with more than 16 years European and UK driving experience…Vehicles we have are a Transit jumbo and a 7.5

Obviously, at least one of these parties does not realise that you cannot pretend that you own a Limited Company, if the Limited Company name has already been registered by someone else. :stuck_out_tongue:

To all those that think there’s no money in haulage
Gregory’s of Devon have just ordered pretty much every scania that will be made in the next 5 years (550)

Transit van or 7.5 tonner tops. That’s where the biggest profit per £1 spent is.
