What makes a 'good' driver?

Phillip Mitchell:
License dont mean good driver, all younguns with license dont know what it is too be good driver, no nights of road anymore, boy in a truck overtook me and flashed him when to pull in he dont say thankyou with ligts so i go past him and he dont look at me no flash for me pull back in and give him thannks with breaks then he come padt agen shaking fists shouting I just laugh and fladh him agen to come in and no thankyou agen, younguns need good slap, take awy license and have diferrent job til grown up.

Let me see if I have understood this correctly.

The young driver knew where the end of his vehicle was and didn’t need, or react to, pointless, not to mention illegal, flashes of the headlights. The old driver doesn’t appear to know where the end of his vehicle is and needs a flash to compensate for his lack of driving skills. His lack of driving ability is further shown by the fact he brakes after overtaking someone and pulling back over. There is also his lack of skill in keeping a constant speed and his simmering road rage when overtaken, not to mention he would rather another driver stop looking where he is going and look at him, for no apparent reason, while he is overtaking.

Right, I think I’ve got that. Seems clear who needs their licence taking away and doing a different job.

What boils my ■■■■ is old ■■■■■ who try to use text speak but cannot spell anyway

this is also funny…and witty

Well said coffee, though i doubt he’ll take the slightest bit of notice of us pointing out his failings as a ‘professional’ driver

‘…what personal qualities do you require to be a good driver…?’

Maybe for a day driver to stand up to a slave-driving planning clerk and say ‘It’s not-on to unilaterally roster me onto reduced rest, mate’?

It is perfectly “on” by the very nature of his job title, & reinforced by the 2006 legislation.

A transport undertaking shall organise the work of
drivers referred to in paragraph 1 in such a way that the
drivers are able to comply with Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85
and Chapter II of this Regulation. The transport undertaking
shall properly instruct the driver and shall make regular
checks to ensure that Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85 and
Chapter II of this Regulation are complied with.

Just because you “can” take a reduced break doesn’t mean you should. Last Christmas eve i went in after a reduced break and then sat around for over 2 hours. the net result was no earlier delivery/finish and felt like crap for most of the day with less sleep and a noticeable lack of Christmas spirit towards the plank who assured me that every thing will be good to go when we came in.

Phillip Mitchell:
no good drivers anymore all young kids driving dangerous should be 25 before licence given, every day see younguns takin rixs and doing danger stuff, ban em until 25 or 30 and no how to handle truck safey. good driver is safe driver

In short, a load of bollox.

What pees me off in the young v old debate, is the assumption that you’re an inferior driver if you cant rope and sheet, tie various boy scout knots etc; Why would I want the nostalgia of climbing onto a loaded tipper in the wind and rain and fannying about unfolding a sheet and then walking along the side doing lovely neat knots when I can press a switch on the dash and sheet the load in seconds?
Would a better driver prefer a starting handle than an ignition key?

is the assumption that you’re an inferior driver if you cant rope and sheet, tie various boy scout knots etc;

you would be inferior if you and a guy who could do the above went for the same job where these skills were needed.
well maybe not inferior but less qualified.

Phillip Mitchell:
License dont mean good driver, So you’re admitting you’re not a good driver?

all younguns with license dont know what it is too be good driver, You was a ‘youngun’ once, so you’re admitting you used to be a ■■■■ driver also?

no nights of road anymore, Maybe if you’re doing days you don’t see the nights on the road?

boy in a truck overtook me and flashed him when to pull in he dont say thankyou with ligts so i go past him and he dont look at me no flash for me pull back in and give him thannks with breaks And this makes you a good driver? Or were you just reliving your days as a ‘youngun’ of being a ■■■■ driver?

then he come padt agen shaking fists shouting I think I among many others would be the same if someone did that to them

I just laugh and fladh him agen to come in and no thankyou agen, Well I wouldn’t be thanking you if you just braked infront of me just to prove a ‘point’ :unamused:

younguns need good slap,You were a youngun once and still act like it, so I’m assuming you’re still awaiting a good slap considering you still drive like a ■■■■ under your own admission

take awy license and have diferrent job til grown up. Read the above, and i think the person who needs to grow up and have their license taken away is you

■■■■ of the year award goes too… :unamused:

no your rong all younguns need a good kickin id do myslef if i cud bout time govermant woke up and sort this county out sort younguns out and mafe motorway safe agen safey is most top thing to do. younguns go to slow cors acidants and need license taken full stop

Well with a name like yours Phillip why should we take any notice of you anyway? And if you are indeed a ‘so called professional’ driver then can i ask how old not actually are and how many years you’ve held your hgv licence for?

Phillip Mitchell:
no your rong all younguns need a good kickin id do myslef if i cud bout time govermant woke up and sort this county out sort younguns out and mafe motorway safe agen safey is most top thing to do. younguns go to slow cors acidants and need license taken full stop

You openly admitted on a public forum you braked infront of a ‘young’ driver because he didn’t flash you in and you wanted to ‘teach’ him a lesson, but what did you teach him other than teach him of you being an utter ■■■■ for no reason other than to make you feel your more important? Which was a potential accident waiting to happen by the way. You don’t need me telling you ‘think of the children’ because you should already know what could have happened with your stupid actions.

Cheers

Jonny

Edit: Shortened it at least to the main point

Find a primary school and learn to spell first. Next, you sound like one of these oxygen thieving drivers who hates anyone not old enough to have driven an AEC, slept in a flea ridden bed at a “proper transport cafe”, and driven in a winter where you scraped ice of your glasses going down the A1 at 25mph…
I’ve worked with some “old timers” like you and despite years of service, complain about the firm left right and centre yet wont retire or sod off and get a job elsewhere…
This is not a rant against “old time” drivers in general, just those cantankerous fossils who think they’re better because they did it first (in black and white  )

You lot not spot a wrong 'un yet? :unamused:

As someone who has employed many different drivers, I would say:

  1. Always turn up for work on time unless you have the occasional very good excuse. Answer the hands free phone, or return calls promptly, nothing worse than trying to get hold of a driver who isn’t on the ball with the phone.

  2. Keep moaning to a minimum. (you can moan as much as you like behind my back as long as I don’t have to listen to it). Biggest moaner equals first out the door in tough times, a helpful & get the job done attitude (within reason) goes a long way.

  3. May be obvious but try for zero damage, i’d rather a driver admitted he wasn’t skilled enough to get a trailer somewhere then was full of bravado about being the big, I AM and damaged the equipment.

Silver surfers last coments the true one
be on time or early, answer the phone safely and zero damage or as near to it as someone who employs drivers the pain is damages and as usual mr nobody did it des matter what age of equipment it is it should all be treated with respect, and i always say dont ask a driver to do something you cant do yourself
my bugbear is drivers who think they know everything and always blame equipment, trucks today have too much electronics(but not a bad thing) young ones dont feel the road and the roll of truck and trailer and rely on SAT NAV and dont look far enough ahead not saying they should al run out and drive old aec or atki no power steering, sheet a full load of cardboard boxes ,carry 24 tons on 4 axles with 200 bhp but i think there is a happy compromise coz with 500 bhp air susp air seat ebs abs etc satnav rollover, limiters stuff there is no feel to truck driving
sorry just another old ■■■■ who only drives if he has to
