I am interested to know what you people do in the trucking world ?
I am currently looking “Again” , So i am considering trying a few diferent types of driving through the dreaded agencies .I have escaped them up until now .
No naming firms as that can backfire on you … Just what is it you actually do day to day ? And what part of the world etc ?
It would be nice to be able to create a picture of a few of you regular posters .No bragging or blatant horse dung .Other than looking for ideas on my next roll , i find it interesting to read about diferent flavours of this trade …
Be honest ?
I deliver frozen tat nationwide from my Lincolnshire base, simple as that, nothing grand or unusual.
actually work as a cleaner -
but i am on the forum as i like “running with the herd” so to speak

I deliver building products from a well known builders merchant. Own account work delivering from our RDC to various branches throughout England. Typical day is around 6 branches which are usually in the same area. It can sometimes just be a one hit like Carlisle for example.
But to be honest mate, even though it’s a Mon-Fri gig with decent pay & motor, it’s still a pile of dung in my opinion. Despite my best efforts to stick at lorry driving, it’s a very lowly skilled job with massive amounts of accountability/responsibility and I am sharing the roads with people who just don’t give a [zb] about anyone or anything.
I only have one life and I ain’t gonna waste it much longer getting fat, lazy and ignorant like most lorryists
Class 1 delivering bulk bags fertiliser to farms. Love it! Money quite good, lorry not so good out all week.
Box jockey here, plenty of driving but very little load interaction, ok by very little I mean none. Hardest part of me job is a stiff door handle.
Well that and some tricky reverses but great variety and decent company kit also.
I also consult for the govt but that’s a secret.
Part time tanker work. Winding down to retirement.
My main job I move medical trailers (Mobile breast screeners, MRI’s, CT’s etc) around the UK & Ireland. I also do event work like hospitality trailers and custom builds which can be a couple of days building and some of that work takes me around Europe mainly to do with F1.
Other times I could be delivering ambulances and fire engines.
When I do work (Winter only) I do agency work so it varies, although I do tend to be kept on jobs for a few weeks at a time. Last Winter I had one job where I drove from Coventry to Crewe every single day and just sat there for 3-4 hours while they unloaded me, another where I delivered concrete blocks to builders merchants, one where I did trailer swaps at supermarket RDCs. I don’t have any great interest in any of it to be honest, so long as I don’t start before 0600 and don’t do nights out I don’t really care what I do.
I’ve just left ferry trailers on general, going into the music/touring world.
I suppose I do class one general but it really is very general. Last week my week went something like this…
Monday - Drive Rugby to Stowmarket, collect a load of lawnmowers and take them to Birmingham then collect a full load of Dyson air dryer things from another place in Birmingham and take back to Rugby.
Tuesday - Take a full load of building supplies from Rugby for roadworks in Dawlish, drive light to Halesowen and collect a full load of office supplies and return to Rugby.
Wednesday - Rugby to Glasgow to drop 14 pallets of promotional stuff off for some show at the SSE Hydro then head up towards Aberdeen for a night out.
Thursday - Two drops furst one up a mountain at a substation then another up near Peterhead then back to Annan to collect a load of fertilized peat bound for Aylesbury. Night out at Gretna.
Friday - Head to Aylesbury but on way asked to do another night out so return to Rugby and drop my trailer and pick up another for Aldi Cardiff, head off to Cardiif and park handy for a 5am tip on Saturday.
Saturday - Tip Aldi return light to Rugby.
So while general gets a bad rep you can see that it gets me about and that I carry varied loads to varied industries from farms to RDC and I reckon that’s why I enjoy it. If it was trunking RDC to RDC I’d end up resenting the job.
Day work on general haulage nowadays as it suits my lifestyle, truck good, trailers not so and work easy.
Was on covered car transporters Uk/Europe for the majority of the last 26 years…
All but 1 job has been in and around Southampton.

Been class one 7 months. Ltd agency work. Have done some right sh it since I passed, and some decent stuff. Done general haulage curtain siders, flat beds with pallets of stone to building sites, plenty of Rdc stuff, the odd fridge of milk. Did a bit for b&m hated it as handballing a double decker of pallets with manual truck and dd taillift is ■■■■■■ didn’t last long but money was good. Been on containers now for 3 months on and off and trying to stay on them. Money isn’t the best I’ve earnt but lots of hours so take home is decent and job is a doddle. Always done mostly days Monday to Friday, have done the odd night out, only ever done one night shift and they ain’t for me
Fridge work across Europe, meat and fish.
Was class 2 now class 1 semi tramping general haulage at same firm for 2 1/2 years
Doing cement board and plants etc also other stuff but I wont say
Monday to Friday
delivering brick/tiles to building sites with crane,■■■■■■ work but easy hours as sites are 8 till 4.30!
Class 2 work delivering food to pubs. Keeps me fit, pushing the cages about. I eat a packed lunch every day, but one of the lads knows where every chippy/takeaway/fast food joint is in relation to the pubs, and eats from one of these fine establishments every night, and theres nothing on him! Plenty of pubs not designed to actually have a delivery, plenty of tight manoeuvres but I enjoy it.
Only work 7 months a year,so take the nearest tramping job available…when it’s time to start work.
Don’t care what it is,or who it’s for…they all pay the same,anyway.
Friday should have been my last day,but i’ve agreed to stay on,until they’ve found a replacement (won’t be easy )
That’s me done till october.
I carry anything that will go on the back anywhere you want so long as eventually I get paid .
Started on HGV I when God was a boy… well, the lines on my face might say that.
Over ten yrs on UK general including ropinn
sheetin, containers, steel, bit of wide and long stuff, etc. Then a couple of years off the road. Came back to driving to do Euro work. General and some tank work. Started easy but developed into 6 week trips. Lots of France, Portugal, Spain, Italy Germany etc. Bit of Med Islands, Greece, Morocco & ex East Blok. Things moved on, and so did I after several years of that. Don
t regret any of it, but wouldn`t want to go back to those days.
Been on UK / France for a few years now. 99% Mon to Fri work.
Mostly 3 to 6 or so drops. Often a dozen or more collections. For me its more interesting than m-ways everywhere, doing full chute work. Some drivers last five minutes here then move on, but most have been here a good few years. Dealer maintained kit, not fancy stuff, but good for the job. Once you
re given your work, mostly just left to get on with it. Phone in when loaded to tell em what boat you want. As relaxed as any company I
ve worked for, especially on Eu work.
Due retirement in a few years time. Happy enough to do keep doing this until then. I enjoy a good moan as much as anyone, but this ain`t as bad as most of the alternatives!
