I’ve spoken to a few drivers who have had enough of driving. So got me thinking what would you do if you was not a hgv driver?
It has to be a job you can actually do right now. So no you can’t be an astronaut or a member of the SAS.
Also are you considering leaving the Industry? I’ll add a poll for this question.
Personally for me. I’d just be a forklift driver and do 9-5 Mon to Friday. I’d quite enjoy that. I might also try my hand at working in a shop.
I’m nearly 43, and definitely letting my HGV licence lapse for the medical at 45. I’ve had enough. For me I never really got over the introduction of driver facing cameras. They’ve had a negative effect on my state of mind since our fleet were fitted out with them. One of the reasons I became an HGV driver was for the complete solitude and privacy of the cab.
I’ve made some money and banked a decent chunk. So I’m thinking of going back to forklift driving, and supplementing it selling my artwork online.

I think forklift driving is underrated
I enjoyed my time as a forkie. It’s like being a shunter without the 12 hour shifts. It’s quite social as well compared to being a HGV driver.
Leaving - for sure. What I going to do, not sure bit want an office job again as that’s the last job I actually enjoyed (formerly web sites and backend IT stuff). Can’t go back to that as its moved on massively. Will definitely be an office job somewhere.
Gotta get out of this job however - even trunking is becoming a headache with too many people trying to kill themselves especially getting one car ahead in roadworks and wiping out stopping distances.
Id go back to being a Gigalo, there's always plenty of work out there fulfilling the needs of all those single wimmin of the UK, though at my age they might not get as much bang for cash

Now you’ve been and gorn and dunnit, define woman i’m off
Not considering stopping just yet, i’ll retire or get sacked as a lorry driver, won’t be doing the job in 5 years time anyway cos already old ■■■■.
Job is still a good un if you search out the right gig and look after it, couldn’t work inside anyway, would work with animals but that might be something for the future after retiring.
Sadly most things I’d want to do and used to be able to do I’m excluded from thanks to knackering up my back driving trucks. I’d love to get back on the spanners working in a garage again but even the bending over from changing a set of spark plugs now leaves me crippled. Got thousands of pounds of tools sat in a top box and roll cab I can’t use any more.
Result of the poll is pretty surpising lol.
I wonder if all these ‘new’ drivers are enough to replace the old guys leaving the industry.
Personally I think a lot of young guys can not hack the hours a lot of truck drivers do.

Hack the hours?
Or make a choice not to?
I came from a career where you were paid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week…
The contract I’m on is nowhere near as bad as some places hours wise and we don’t use POA - but the next set of pay negotiations in April I’ll be pushing for a reduction in contracted hours.
I hold a 10 tonne forklift licence and I have been debating coming of the wagons and going into our yard as a forklift operator on our 10 tonne forklifts.
I’ve just reduced my hours to 3 days/27 hours per week, on the wind-down to full retirement in 3 1/2 years’ time. I’ve no intention of driving a lorry for a living after that date, although I might renew my licence for the first 12 months “just in case”.

Done exactly the same earlier this year. Now just doing a run to Leeds each day and home every night. Retiring fully in 18 months time. Got to say I’ve become completely disillusioned with the job but good luck to those who still get a kick out of it.
