The speed limit…?
Meet em halfway @ 45 mph
Average is
(50+40+40+40+50+60)/6= 280/6 = 46.6`
(I think)
Or
It`s 50 on the hard shoulder, 40 in the lanes, 50 on the central reserve, and 60 for traffic on the opposite carriageway.
It’s an advisory 40mph speed limit not a compulsory speed limit.
Along with a 60mph max limit and 50mph advisory limit for the bend.
Simples innit.

Au contraire. The 40 is compulsory and backed up by cameras, the 50 on the other hand being within an oblong sign is advisory

If the flashing lights are amber then the 40mph signs are advisory, if the flashing lights are red then the 40mph signs are obligatory. Unfortunately I’m colour blind so I can’t give a definitive answer

Moaster is right…
I did a speed awareness course just after Xmas and was told that the cameras are set to the speed limit on the gantry …well that’s the instructor said any way and as we know from CPC they don’t always tell the truth

I was being a little obtuse tbh, the fact of the matter is 3 different speed limits all in one place. For the 40 to be compulsory it has to be in a red circle as far as I understand it. Flashing amber lights should be an advisory speed.

Interestingly, I’ve just looked, and the amber lights as per the photo is advisory speed limit only.
The only enforceable one, is when there is a red circle and the speed.

On m-ways red lights flash alternately side to side, amber flash top/bottom.
On the photo the top pairs are lit, therefore they are amber.

Totally correct.
There are 2 kinds of speed notifications on gantries in this country. The old style (as in pic) was only ever advisory. For any speed limit notification to have any effect in law it must be a legal sign which includes the requirement of the red circle [emoji778].

Well…that was a waste of time.

^ The camera says that’ll be 6 points and a lot of ’ motorway tax '.

Exactly what he said, simples
Looks like driving schools are teaching people incorrectly then as they also say amber lights are advisory speeds only.
Same as the highway code. The wording should and must have different interpretations in law. Should means you should do it, but it is not mandatory.
Must means you must follow it, as in it is mandatory.

The max speed of 60mph is for air quality. Lmao.
Cos it’s the black country.

To be fair it’s a similar justified paranoia as slowing to a crawl going under a low bridge that’s marked a few inches higher than the vehicle or slowing down below the limit going through a speed camera just in case you’ve got it wrong.
The penalties are just too huge to take anything at face value as it seems.
It’s a moot point anyway, because as you pass the first speed restriction sign the Honda Jazz that’s way back in your mirrors wil accelerate to pass you and once in front will immediately brake to 10mph under whatever the signs say.

That is exactly how I understand the law to be. No red circle, no mandatory limit.
