What is your biggest issue on the road?

Hi all, just wondered if you guys had any common pain points or particular issues you come across whilst going about your day to day driving? I am doing some research for an article to be published elsewhere and have consulted this forum before, which resulted in us producing a guide on how to use ferry mode and tachograph’s properly that got a really positive response. So, sound off below on anything that grinds your gears or leaves you at a complete loss! :grimacing:

This is a research topic, which has been given permission. dd.

1 - Drivers who park/abandon their cars on corners or on double yellows, especially in industrial estates.
2 - Motorists who decide my braking distance is to become their handy gap to drive in
3 - Other vehicles on a motorway which is clear infront of them yet decide to move back in around 5 feet after passing you
4 - Going to overtake a slow vehicle which suddenly finds extra speed yet slows back down once youve pulled back in behind it
5 - Traffic lights which go to green and change back again long before youve got the unit and trailer across the junction, especially when theres yellow hatching

That the sort of thing youre looking for?

3 and 4 lane motorways that are effectively reduced to 2 lanes at junctions because of incompetent and or selfish drivers .
People blocking junctions.
Prius drivers ? do they have to take a special wally driving course to be allowed to drive one , it has become so bad that I give them a wide very wary birth out on the road and develop a twitch if anybody mentions that they drive one .

On three-lane motorways, car drivers in lane 2 who see me indicate to overtake the truck I am catching up but won’t move into the empty lane 3 to let me out.

Drivers who drive at 30mph in 40mph limits for no good reason other than the speed cameras.

Businesses that allow people to put skips or park cars in their yards, making turning round very difficult or impossible.

Businesses that impose strict delivery times, but when we arrive in the half-hour slot they dictated, make us wait for hours.

Companies that insist that drivers wait out of their trucks, but provide no, or very poor, facilities to wait in.

Roundabouts !!

most drivers don’t know how to indicate properly on them, that’s if they indicate at all !! :imp:

you end up sitting there like a muppet or pull out in front of them

Drivers who religiously sit at 40mph on a 40mph limit but then still carry on doing 40mph when the limit drops to 30mph or other such speeds.

Other road users.

When you are in queue to tip at a RDC, 15 artics waiting to be called in then a puddle jumper goes to the front of the line and says he only has one pallet, then a sob life story that he has to finish early as booked a meal with the wife, or the dog at home is dying.

Shabby drivers that wear a uniform, but somehow, mixed it up with their clothes, and look like Wurzel Gummidge, boots with holes, missing shoe laces.

The mullet hair style from the 70’s, and was an European rock and roll tour driver who ate dinner with Mick Jagger or Bono.
Driving with a hi viz, you look like a dork, fair enough on local multi drop, but long distance, what is the point.

Ignorant goods in staff.

A lack of decent parking facilities for HGVs in the U.K. I also do a lot of driving in a France and their Routiers network is far superior both in terms of number of locations, the facilities, quality and price of food on offer.

Road closures.
Road closures and the crappy diversions.
Road closures and people who stop in the middle of the road to check their sat nav.
Road closures and people who drive at 10mph because they’re not sure if they’re on the right road.
Road closures eating into my driving time but having nowhere to park up for a break because all the lay bys and services are full.
Did I mention road closures.
Road closures.

Farming ■■■■■■■■ car drivers that persist in stopping in laybyes, right in the middle so you can’t get in, ■■■■■■■■

My biggest one is car drivers sticking to around 50 mph on the motorway when the road is clear. Cars shouldn’t be holding trucks up since their speed limit is considerably higher than ours. Driving under the limit in general actually.
Other drivers expecting us to move over when they are joining from a slip road. Why can they just accelerate and get gone?
Undertaking and dodging inand out of lanes.
Taking my safety gap, and trying to chop my nose off when pulling in from an overtake.
If i flash you in and you use my flash say thanks. It not difficult.
Hmm think thats it for now [emoji6]

Today’s issue :open_mouth: :unamused: why do so many lorry drivers cross the m6 at j20 in the right lane coming from Warrington side and then go left on to the A50 for the poplars ,umpteen times I’ve been cut up there .it clearly says on the right lane m6 m56 and on the left it says A50 Lymm .

Scouish or Mancunian or Welsh you mean  or in some form of southern shandy language

I’m a night driver, my biggest issue is the widespread upgrading of motorways to smart motorways because:

  1. The night road closures often add a lot of time (road closures per se being another issue for me).
  2. 15+ miles of often potholed narrow lanes is not the most pleasant experience night after night after night.
  3. I don’t like how the hard shoulder is sacrificed for the sake of an extra lane. I’ve had 3 near misses in 4 months on unlit sections with broken down vehicles.
  4. They take far too long to upgrade.

It’s now at the point where I find it more pleasant and sometimes quicker using the old A road network instead of motorways.

apart from all the other relevant points added, then this one is a winner 365 days a year.
no facilities for parking, eating, resting,or just being treated as a normal working man.
the only other thing that puts the above into the shade is the absolute 24/7 incompetence and useless workings of highways england/uk and the wombles they instruct.

what the ■■■■ did we ever do to you?

I can relate to most of the issues already posted, here’s my personal ‘favorite’ - when I move over to lane 2 to let someone merge in and then they match their speed to mine, driving parallel to me - neither undertaking nor slowing down to let me back into lane 1 and when I slow down to let them pass me on my left, they slow down too. Very annoying during busy traffic hours and worst of all most of the time it’s other trucks doing this…
