No he donāt smile at everyone, just a happy bloke who loves life. And he lives with his mum because itās cheaper for him, heās away all week and home at weekends. He preffers not to be tied down. Fair play to him i say
Woops butter fingers.
Double post!
if i started smiling the other drivers would worry somthing was wrong
i have a natural scowl so to smile all day would be bloody hard work , i have been called un aproachable but thats fine , the less people i have to talk to the less worries i have , a problem shared still isnāt my problem
although after a visit my partners friends have e-mailed her to ask if theyād upset me as i seemed to be in a bad mood , her reply is no heās always like that
but i always wave back if iāve been waved to, saw a little lad with his mum in fordingbridge the other day waving at all the lorries as if his hands would fall off of course i smiled a tooth gleaming ātingā type smile & a quick beep of the horn , the little chap was right chuffed as he started clapping as well , that made me smile
the day usually goes well till the office phone in

I use to do that as a little lad wave at all the tipper trucks that went by, most waved back some didnāt some just looked at me and drove on
Only once have I had the horn from a truck driver but that was when i was at pontefract park with the girlfriend but thats a different reason
I find that, my day goes great. Then I end up in college and it all goes down hill from there.
Only time I get cheered up is when Iām told what grade iāve gotten from a piece of work. English coursework was a dreaded nightmare in school, Never worried about it now me!!
Even the shakespeare ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā , Got a B in that today. Well chuffed with myself Makes a huge difference from an F back in school
If my school teachers saw me now, Theyād be shocked!

You just know they had too much of a good night together And I suspect the guy in the passenger seat hiding himself a bit is the takerā¦
Ill tell you what the matter is john crap money for one and thats just for starters ok, right you,v the boss on ya case you have ole bill breathing down ya neck turn any corner and you have Vosa down the road theres speed cameras you get to the place to do the drop wot do ya get its a least a 4 hour wait or we havent enough blokes to unload you its not a crack any more mate that was years ago those days have finished there is a hell o f a lot of stress on drivers to day now with all that cosidered they want you now to try and get your head round all these stupid hours and sit nvqs how the hell did they think we got on goin to europe and asia in the 60s n 70s with out all that nonsense bloody eu has totally taken any enjoyment out of it,Im glad im the age i am .Because i was there when it was a job to be proud of I packed up when 56 mph came in that put the last nail in the coffin for a lot of drivers.I packed it up 15 years ago. retrained as a plumber (crap job) but i still class my self as a driver allways will started when i was 17 packed it up when i reached 50 sorry about the rant but you did ask.
am sure if you seen drivers driving around with stupid smiley faces you would think they were right ā ā ā ā ā ā , do you see school teachers sitting there smiling, people in offices smiling, the only people who smile constantly have deep rooted problems, i always smile when i splash students standing in bus stops as i drive past it sort of makes my day, hope this helps
its not just drivers is it. i smiled a couple of school girls and they gave me a right dirty looks. its a society thing nowadays everyone is so busy doing their own thing nobody bothers or dares to look wave or draw the attention of other people in case it provokes a violent reaction it does happen, i think its a bit unfair to call truck drivers miserable weāre no worse than the average person on the street.
when you see drivers sat in traffic its not the most enjoyable part of driving, theres too much to look out for got to check every mirror constantly for numpty pedestrians, car drivers and suicidal cyclists on top of that we have to navigate city centers that just werenāt designed for modern artics.

i think its a bit sad when drivers would rather sit on there own than sit and talk to other drivers, just shows a total lack of social skills to me, if you ever do end up talking to these types of drivers, you find there divorced, seperated,no family, nothing really, sad really.
it costs nothing to smile, say morning, have a chat, you dont have to be there buddy, mate for ever, just sociableIām like that because I got fed up of hearing the same old crap from the same old b/s merchants over and over again. My social skills are fine thanks, I just have no interest in using them on drivers whoāll just sit there and moan endlessly.

Its your opinion mate everyones entitled to it. No need to be sorry! I understand the job has changed alot through the years, its changed alot in the 17 years iāve been around so god knows what it was like before!
Very interesting read, but still doesnāt put me off. Must be mad.
Biscuitsā¦you hit the nail on the head, i am an exception to your observation in the fact i started in this industry 48 yrs ago1963ā¦i was happy for a few yearsā¦then the rules and regulations came inā¦and i got so far into the job that i couldnt do anything else ( like most truckers )
However i have cheered up recently cos i have only 2 days left to retirement after 50 yrs so you can imagine the smile on my face is as long as a 12mtr tilt with a 141 scania on the front

Ok, this is a little bit of a rant and a bit of a question answer thing again![]()
Waiting for the bus this morning every truck driver that passed looked as if they had been slapped and told to shut up.

What are you on to expect anyone to be happy first thing in the morning

Waiting for the bus this morning every truck driver that passed looked as if they had been slapped and told to shut up. Why are truck drivers so bloody miserable, I was always told that if your on the road you have a laugh and whatever not look as though youāve done 10 rounds with mike tyson and lost!
Not to mention a woman car driver on her way to workā¦I knew she was a truck driver with what she was wearing, & Definitely not hard to tell who she drives for!! Big green company, thought they were supposed to be happy and cheery drivers, the crem da la crem of truck drivers??
![]()
Needless to say she gave me a right dirty look i thought about waving seeing if she waved back like said on the show if you wave theyāll wave back ā¦Didnāt look like sheād give me a nice wave back!!
Anyway its just a question of why are there so many miserable buggars out on the road! Cheer up you set of grumpy buggars

Cheers
Jonny
Why are you even noticing this BS? In fact why do you even care?
The only thing kids of your age (which Iām assuming to be about 12 if your mummy pays for you to go gym) should be interested in is how fast you can prestige on BLOPS and how high a KDR you can get to impress your mates.
If people want to go about their lives with a miserable fizog, so what? Get over it.

Life is what you make it. Clearly from this post you did the right thing by packing up when you did. The job used to stress me out to [zb] within 12 months of gaining my ticket but looking back it was all self-caused - rushing about everywhere like the world was going to end if it let the speed drop below 56 for more than a few mins. When you wake up to the fact that none of it matters and stuff gets there when it gets there it soon becomes a fairly relaxing and steady-away job, particularly if you enjoy driving (as I do).

For once I agree with Ady1 . Iāll chat with anyone about anything and it only takes a minute or two to work out what sort of person they are. Generally I find the 50+ drivers to all moan, moan, moan, moan and moan some more - you can usually spot them a mile off rolling their eyes or shaking their heads when you make eye contact with them. Usually the younger ones are pretty good to have a laugh with, although there are of course plenty of exceptions to both age āgroupsā.

Couldnāt agree more Rob, gone are the days when I let planners push me, now itās āsorry mate, best I could doā
I agree with Rob too. This is not a difficult stressful job. I love it, its very easy. I drive from a to b to c to the best of my abilities. Donāt worry about anything. Traffic is not a concern, delays at rdcās neither. The office sorts out problems, I drive. If your having problems with stress itās because your making them.

Well said, Rob. The best thing I did was to slow down and even now when I get a note on my schedule with āwanted between 10am and 11amā or whatever I cross-it through with a byro and just plod on as normal. When I get the āwhereāve you been?ā I reply with āWhy? Whatāve I missed?ā Usually shuts most people up as they can see I wont apologise for the late delivery (even though Iāve probably stopped en-route for a cuppa or a kip-or both).
JonnyTruckArtist wouldāve seen me smile Thursday morning; I drove past Woodgreen School in Witney when a couple of top-heavy sixth-formers walked by.
