What is reasonable overtime

anyone know where there are some guidlines on what “reasonable” consists of?
my other half works in a shop and they have cut all there hours down to 14 hr contracts so they basically have no rights {sick pay etc} but they still expect them to work around 20 hrs a week with the other 6 hrs being overtime
my wife has found another part time job at the school to fit in, but the shop boss says she cant do it as she may be required to work fulltime when people are off on holiday
her contract says “reasonable overtime must be worked as and when required”
any thoughts anyone?

Find another job. These shop managers are little dictators. No pay no play.

I know at freightliner it’s 1 hour a day although the management aren’t so keen on that.

Sounds very harsh, shop man wants his staff at his beck and call but is not flexible towards his staff. I don’t know your circumstances but I would tell my mrs to jack the job at the shop. He cuts hours and then won’t let your mrs make a few quid extra else where, sounds like a right ■■■■■■

its not the boss its a national chain and they set the rules, thing is its a 2 minute walk from home as she doesnt drive and she has been there 7 years and actually likes the job, just looking for something she can throw at him hours wise, shes willing to work 2 hrs every week which on a 14hr contract seems fair to me, i,m just trying to find some guidlines she can take to work to argue her case

I reckon the only thing your mrs can do is just sit her boss down and explain as they have cut her hours she has had to look for another part time job as times are hard and every penny counts, tell them the hours her new job requires and say she will be flexible around the hours that she is available to the shop. A decent manager will hopefully see it from your mrs point of view.

All major retailers are pulling this stunt now, my cousin works in a shop and has had her hours cut to 12 plus overtime as required, it is just a ruse to avoid paying sick and hols etc, sign the tories are in again eh? :imp:

Wouldn’t be allowed if the BNP were in power.

Er, why the ■■■■ should she work any unpaid o/t? It’s not like shop work pays mega bucks! Name and shame the ■■■■■.

I don’t think that the OP meant unpaid overtime.

I also don’t think that there are any rules on what is reasonable o/t.

It’s not like shop work pays mega bucks

Not usually but Aldi are paying a better rate then some c+e drivers claim to be paid on here!

You’re absolutely right he didn’t! Don’t know where i got that from but I will say that many a back door man working for a very large supermarket chain has complained to me of the unpaid O/T they’re often expected to do. Still, every little helps I suppose…

And you are correct re Aldi rates of pay too!

The world of Retail seems to be able to make up their own rules and nothing seems to be done about it. My Daughter and her Husband done shop work and the way they treat people just wouldn’t happen in other employments, he still works for a Bedding retailer and its not unusual for him to be getting home around Nine at night after a long boring day in a shop because he also has to go to customers houses if they have had a problem with their latest buy to sort it out. He never gets any Bank Holidays off or weekends unless he is actually on leave. I always feel sorry for these people at Xmas time when we are sitting full of grub and drink and they are working stupid hours for these mindless Morons that want to shop on Boxing Day! If anyone needs a strong Union its shop workers.

Still, every little helps I suppose

If you do less then 16 hour you can apply for jobseeker Allowence.
You may not get anything, but it counts towards your Pension, and if you dont do you will loose out of many Houres/week,if not all.
In that Case stay under 16 hour a week and register at Jobcentre+ as Jobseeker

If the boss/company can’t go along with that he/they aint worth working for.

Your employer can’t simply bar you from taking a second job if there’s nothing in your contract that prohibits it and there isn’t any obvious deterioration in your performance. If they attempt to, it is worth getting specialist advice from Acas or your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

found this on Google.
It seems that the important bit is if there is anything in her contract, and there usually is.
Welcome to 21st century Britain.

this will make you p1$$ your sides! If you know the little welsh ops manager ( Mr Wayne Kerr ) at Appleton ( obviously not his real name ) but rhymes with banker! According to him once you’ve done 71 hours you can work Saturday as well as it’s a reasonable amount of overtime! Now just remember we had our guaranteed hours cut from 50 to 45 hours! Now seeing as we don’t get paid OVERTIME rates I think twenty six hours is a reasonable amount of FREE time for stobart wouldn’t you agree! TESCO every little helps! STOBARTS very little help :grimacing: mind you TESCO stands for " the eddie stobart cowboy outfit " well that’s what they called us when we took over middlewich! :sunglasses:

Now just remember we had our guaranteed hours cut from 50 to 45 hours! Now seeing as we don’t get paid OVERTIME rates I think twenty six hours is a reasonable amount of FREE time for stobart wouldn’t you agree

!

I know very little about Stobarts rates of pay/conditions etc.
Are you saying that after you have done 45 hours paid work, you then go on to do another 26 hours UNPAID work?

still get paid at FLAT rate! No incentive to work weekends once you’ve done 71 hours mon- fri and four nights out! But we earn enough for doing nowt anyway! Easylife :grimacing:
