What is or was your favourite LGV job?

Mine was working for Upton steels at Markfield Leics for 15+ years

It was ‘own account’ so mainly going out loaded and returning empty in a 26 tonne rigid ERF then Scania for the most part but very occasionally driving one of the subbies artics

Now they mainly use low curtain siders but in my time there it was flatbeds with double thick overlapping sheeting so ‘fun’ in bad weather but great in summer because we could leave the sheets off all day

The average drops was 6 with each taking an average of 20 mins per drop during a day shift of 10 to 15 hours - averaged out about 12/13 hours a day and we covered any area which could be done on a day run - now they do the odd nights out so they can cover more area.

The other thing I liked was when I got back early enough to sort out all the loads - the manager would give me all the delivery notes which included the various weights and sizes of the steel and I had to distribute those between our own fleet as well as the subbies

I found that to be very rewarding as firstly it was sorting the loads into areas then working out what vehicles would be needed for each area considering what each could carry and fit as well as the order they would do them in

I then marked up each load and made what could only be described as a ‘matchstick man’ type pic of a lorry with diagrams of where each bit of the load was to go - that was useful for the forkies when they came to load them

I’ll bet they have some sort of computer programme which does that these days …

So back to the question - What is or was your favourite LGV job ?

Must admit i use to enjoy working on the steel for IMS in essex.

I used to have a great little number delivering rental trailers in a tidy Land Rover Discovery until some low life, no life, sad sack [zb] grassed me up for nipping into lane 3 to pass a middle lane hogger doing 46 mph for miles on end

Why not use lane 1 to pass it :bulb:

because that would be undertaking, and illegal

Going off topic a bit here but … that is NOT illegal

Lane 1 was busy with cars and wagons. The gonk in the middle lane was clearly not paying proper attention and so a move up the inside would of been a vastly greater risk. He wasn’t looking where he should of been and would expect others to be let alone someone undertaking.

Do the I.A.M. advise and condone undertaking then ■■?

Regardless of legality which is at best shaky, it’s a foolish and dangerous move

still off topic, but, it depends on the circumstances as to whether it is legal or not

1)if you are driving at a constant speed in lane 1 and there is a car in lane 2, you pass him in lane 1, it is NOT illegal

  1. if you come up behind the car in lane 2, then move into lane 1 and speed up to pass, then pull back out again, this IS illegal

do you not know anything?

the way that you described it, would be scenario 2 :unamused:

Heavy work, but it kept you fit and the rewards were worth it

Believe it or not … Richard Long on the JCB European work (once away from Wyndam though) apart from when I had me own truck.

multi drop delivering fruit machines to arcades, and delivering tower crane sections, that was a cool job. both for kts logistics.

Driving a low loader for a company doing power station maintenance.
Just moving plant from one power station to the next in a circle around the UK.
out all week, own boss and loads of fiddles.
Always somewhere decent to park with canteen, showers etc.
