I turned down a job paying £7.50p/h yesterday as it was too far to travel. I’d give it serious thought if it was on my doorstep but it still sounds a crap rate. What do you think is acceptable?
I think it depends where you live and your circumstances, 7.50 when you have no job is a good wage…
How ever IMO. It is very low .
That is good for up here (NE) a couple of company’s don’t pay more than £7 for class 1 here £6.60/£6.70 p/h
Seems to be the going rate round Notts to, I personally think it’s a crap wage. Better then none though, worked for £7.15ph once but yard was only a mile away from base so didn’t mind and was better then agency. I’ve come off artics for now as don’t believe in working for such crap wages when the company owner cries about being skint with his 50k car and massive house bla bla. Not that I think it’s wrong these guys have all that, but paying crap wages to hard working lads just cause they can ■■■■■■ me off
Id probably take another job on artics again if money was right, quite missing them actually.

Sweet jesus. The cleaner mopping the toilets at the MSA we stop at isnt doing much worse. They arent in charge of 44 tons on the road and they certainly didnt pay £2k for their stripes.
As much as i love driving, there is a point where i would just go down to tescos for a shelf stacking job. A going rate of <£7 woud definatly be that tipping point i think.
Sad state of affairs.

Interesting you mention class 1, as the job I turned down was for a 7.5tonner.
with a fear of being slated here i personally wouldent work for less than £9 an hour i think imm worth at least that i also think if drivers where not prepared to work for low wages then firms would have to pay proper hourly rates but thats just my thoughts now i better duck !

I don’t think that’s unreasonable, I’d say £8.50 roughly but then on agency I get fuel allowance etc which makes up for it.
I’m in two minds whether to apply for a job that would mean buying a second car that would cost about £35 per week to get there and back. The advert says £23800-£26000 per year, 45 hours per week average.

You were quite right. It doesn’t matter what the hourly rate is - what matters is what you have left at the end of the month.
I once worked for a firm that paid crap wages (about 7 shillings and 6 pence an hour I think) but we got a meal allowance, we were paid a night out every night whether we were away or not, and we were paid when we were off sick. Other drivers on ten bob an hour were worse off. Oh! and were were paid 60 hours a week, every week, for 40 to 50 hours.
£7.50 seems low…
OK, so I haven’t worked (or lived) In the UK for nearly 17 years so what do I know??
Most drivers I know over here (Belgium, for those of you that don’t know), earn no less than 11.20 Euro’s per hour (roughly just under £9).
The average earn 11.50 Euro’s per hour (£9.20)…
There’s also lots of firms over here employing Eastern European drivers & they earn more than £7.50 per hour…(averaged out over a monthly period)…
If you’re happy earning £7.50 per hour, then go for It. I guess It beats being unemployed…

That’s just it if you have got a couple of kids its not worth it, over £400pw in benefits for a family of 4 including 2 kids and your not out of the house all week. Then they wonder why people don’t want to work lol. Make bosses pay more and pay dolies less

Yes. It needs to be more benefisual(spelling) to the worker to go to work than sitting at home.
£400 a week staying at home, verses £400 a week driving a truck. Hmmm, That’s just a no brainer really…
