"What did the EU ever do for us?
Not much, apart from: providing 57% of our trade;
structural funding to areas hit by industrial decline;
clean beaches and rivers;
cleaner air;
lead free petrol;
restrictions on landfill dumping;
a recycling culture;
cheaper mobile charges;
cheaper air travel;
improved consumer protection and food labelling;
a ban on growth hormones and other harmful food additives;
better product safety;
single market competition bringing quality improvements and better industrial performance;
break up of monopolies;
Europe-wide patent and copyright protection;
no paperwork or customs for exports throughout the single market;
price transparency and removal of commission on currency exchanges across the eurozone;
freedom to travel, live and work across Europe;
funded opportunities for young people to undertake study or work placements abroad;
access to European health services;
labour protection and enhanced social welfare;
smoke-free workplaces;
equal pay legislation;
holiday entitlement;
the right not to work more than a 48-hour week without overtime;
strongest wildlife protection in the world;
improved animal welfare in food production;
EU-funded research and industrial collaboration;
EU representation in international forums;
bloc EEA negotiation at the WTO;
EU diplomatic efforts to uphold the nuclear non-proliferation treaty;
European arrest warrant;
cross border policing to combat human trafficking, arms and drug smuggling; counter terrorism intelligence;
European civil and military co-operation in post-conflict zones in Europe and Africa;
support for democracy and human rights across Europe and beyond;
investment across Europe contributing to better living standards and educational, social and cultural capital.
All of this is nothing compared with its greatest achievements: the EU has for 60 years been the foundation of peace between European neighbours after centuries of bloodshed
60 years of peace. Nothing to do with the EU
Everything to do with fear of Stalinism (Remember he was every bit as bad as Hitler)
Alot to do with Europe (and Britain) being reduced to a wasteland by World War 2
The EU would have done nothing about the break-up of Yugoslavia but for Britain
Assisted with the closure of industries
Coal mining
Steel industry
Fishing industry
Manufacturing
Flooded the UK with cheap labour to help keep wages down
Turned some parts of the U.K. into ghettos
Increased pressure on the NHS
Increased pressure of social housing
Kept 600,000 plus 18 to 21 year olds out of work
Let terrorists cross main land Europe without any border controls
Let millions of tonnes of fresh fruit vegetables and fish go to landfill because of the shape or size
Unable to deport convicted murderers rapists drunk drivers due to EUHR
Acted like a dictatorship when sovereign countries as in Ireland Greece and Denmark have voted against the EUs wishes
Cool copy, cut and paste job bro
What’s to say we wouldn’t have done the same without them. People think we are some sort of naive back water country. We are world leaders, we don’t need Europe for making laws and rules we can do that ourselves.
EU brings all these things in and the only country that implements them to the letter is the UK . Other countries do as it suits them .
In our industry many countries have been allowed to put the DCPC back until September this year. A full two years later. So how does that work?
Talking to a Latvian driver he built a sauna and hot tub in his garden. Materials were too expensive in the UK so he had all of the materials brought in from Latvia. I am afraid we are being mugged off by Europe. Of course they wanted to do a deal. They are afraid of losing the school punchbag that they can steal his lunch money every day and nobody cares.
And let’s not forget the Eurovision song contest :0)
Euro:
cheaper air travel;
Surely this has more to do with the rise of no frills airlines.smoke-free workplaces;
Is that an EU thing? Somebody needs to tell the Germans and Austrians.equal pay legislation;
Thought that had more to do with Trade Unions and workers standing together?improved animal welfare in food production;
How come our Pig farmers are suffering from cheap EU products due to the fact they have to abide by higher UK standards of animal welfare?EU diplomatic efforts to uphold the nuclear non-proliferation treaty;
European arrest warrant;
The benefits of which are controversial to say the least.European civil and military co-operation in post-conflict zones in Europe and Africa;
Thought the UN did more of that, or in some cases British forces on their own?
support for democracy and human rights across Europe and beyond;I believe The European Convention on Human Rights pre-dates the EU, and we signed up to it in the 1950’s long before we thought about joining the EEC.

Im buying most of my clothing and some of my electronics from UK over the internet because its cheap and quality is great, I also live 2000km away from UK. Your point is?
P.S. Great post Euro, hang on though, and anti EU avalanche is comming

That sort of thinking is what gets people killed. We USED to be world leaders. Now we’re not. Let the French, Germans, Americans etc. waste their money on wars. They’re actually a lot better at it (remember how the French responded with an armed force on the ground within about 24 hours? Can’t remember the conflict).
Sit back, be like Switzerland. Rich as all holy ■■■■ nuggets (the money in Geneva is insane. It makes our rich people look poor), never involved in conflict (if you exclude the Beefeaters), and completely free to go wherever they like (treated as an EEA country with none of the downsides).
We’re not a big country with loads of weight to throw around. We’re a small country with our own problems…

Some of our home grown policies, and bad practices of both unions and management didn’t do a lot to help British manufacturing industry.Increased pressure of social housing
We also did quite a good job of selling off housing stock and not replacing it.

As far as I understand nothing in EU legislation stop you from selling misshapen fruit and veg, the regs are merely marketing standards, what you can’t sell is fruit and veg showing signs of disease or damage by pests.
The problem is British consumers are so far removed from the natural environment that they won’t buy Fruit and Veg that doesn’t fit their idea of perfect, so any misshapen fruit and veg got left on the shelves, so supermarkets would only buy the right shaped stuff from their suppliers,
And due to a recent campaign Asda are selling misshapen fruit and veg. I’ve also been to various Supermarkets round Europe and they sell misshapen fruit and veg. However the practice of throwing dead fish back because they the wrong type for the quotas is crazy.Unable to deport convicted murderers rapists drunk drivers due to EUHR
As I said before European Charter on Human rights pre-dates the EU and we signed up to it in the 50’s, so EU not really to blame.
Efforts to uphold nuclear non proliferation treaty ■■
Wow , thats changed my mind completely and im now voting IN !!
All we have to do is get North Korea and Isreal to join the EU …
Then they will have to sign the bit of paper .

But we can sell stuff round Europe without all the customs problems you get without a free market with open borders, I’ve been involved with shipping freight for racing teams throughout the World and getting a racing car and equipment to a circuit in the EU is a doddle compared with getting outside the EU even if you are all geared up for air freight, you always have to leave a bit of time for problems with customs.
A good reason but it’s the whole picture
Roads, irrigation…all these posts and no python quotes, very poor indeed
I did read it to myself like Eric idle
Ok.Apart from the Roads,irrigation…What have the Romans done for us?.
Hmm…many good points but I am still not convinced that life would be better alone and outside Europe. When we rejected the Romans we went into the Dark Ages for five hundred years.

Oh wait you mean the people who enjoyed crucifying people and feeding them to wild animals among other such delights for weekend entertainment.
While having eventually got rid of them we actually went into the Anglo Saxon era that gave us our language our country and our culture and governmental system.Having then thrown it all away by not resisting the French invasion and rule which followed.There’s a lesson and message there for anyone who wants to find it.
The EU didn’t wipe out our coal mining industry
The EU didn’t decimate our steel industry - the Chinese and the Indians did - neither of them in the EU
The EU didn’t decimate our commercial vehicle manufacturers
The EU didn’t decimate our motor industry - we managed to do that ourselves - remember Red Robbo et al?
Steve
All of the above posts ^^
I would say they gave us plenty . including plague/s and disease infested itins - ( just to clarify, no, its not similar to an iphone for younger generation ).
But what one hand giveth the other taketh away.
.
As well as .,
as for euroland, and beaurocracy :-
`
Ruined the British farming industry as we know it, and knew it.
Flooded the Uk with products that were home grown and ruined other major Industries to closure.
.
Burnt the UK vehicles and slaughtered animals on-board and at the roadside that crossed the channel.
Refused and still do , meat exports/imports, but are willing to flood the UK and neighboring Countries with their own.
.
Gave us every EU Regulation -law and recommendation that you can find till your hearts contents - Thanks for that , just what we needed.
.
Seems we are a bit short sighted, the Vote was to join the Common market - Not The EU and all stipulations that come and came with it.
Best get your oars out boys and girls , and start paddling, we is already sinking below the water line.
.
Get our own house in order first.
,
and they still have the audacity to go on strike and blockade every few months just for the hell of it and because they can.
.
What else did they give us
Cocaine, the Cheeky girls , and flatulence.
