Bit of background info, I’m 46, been driving since 17, employed fulltime since 18 in work that involves lots of commercial driving with vehicles up to 7.5t, so approx 50, 000 commercial miles per year. Also drive a lot as a hobby so at least another 10 -15,000 miles per yr. Have taken and passed an advanced driving course and also done the practical session of a Class 1 police test with an instructor including the narrated driving (and was told I would have passed if I wasn’t a civvy). I also compete in circuit racing.
All this and I’ve never put a scratch on a vehicle.
Now I’m not saying I’m the best driver in the world but I do think I know how to see hazards forming etc.
Whilst doing the mock/training Hazard tests I found I was clicking too early, not waiting for the hazard to develop a little so when I went for the first real test I adjusted and clicked when I saw the hazard change…result - a dismal score of 53!
Based on the scores I received I realised I was clicking too late now. Huh, typical!
Just taken the test again and clicked as I saw the hazards, I know I missed one completely (didn’t percieve it to be a hazard) but was still shocked to find I failed again, this time with a 61.
So what am I doing wrong?
I’m clicking when I see the hazard and when it changes as per the instructions, so mindful of over clicking and voiding the clip I’m only clicking about 2 or 3 times per clip except for the double hazard clip when its maybe 5 or 6 clicks.
Should I be clicking more? How far across the screen can you go with the red flags before you void the clip?
This is really doing my head in as there’s no way of seeing where I’m going wrong…I thought this would be the easy bit too!
I passed both theory’s first time, just click but not excessively when a potential hazard occurs,
I even scored a 0% for over clicking on a slide, so it is doable if you score 0 for one of the slides
my advice download a theory test app or hazard app It helped me no end even if it appears to be a car the hazard perception is done on, it still the same for hgv, lgv
hope you nail it next time
Common problem with good, experienced drivers. The advice I always give is to click when you see the hazard, count to 2, then click again. That way you’ll get either a good score or a very good score.
I was terrified of the Hazzzard but I used the driving theory 4 all website & went from #1 to #67 twice and if I failed the mock I re watched the video then when I’d done all the mock’s went back to the start… and I passed first time.
I clicked everything that looked like a hazard, and I mean everything! First time I did this on pcv training I failed it, after that I clicked anything that looked like it could make you slow down/change course. This week I did it exactly the same for the LGV haz.
I used the PC CD Rom Driving Test Success to practice hpt and it does help a bit.
The hazard perception is not about testing someones road safety ability its more about how good someone is clicking a mouse at the exact time set by a computer.
Its more like a computer game than a test.
IMO the hazard perception should only be given to first time drivers.
You go for your truck licence yet you have to do a hazard perception for a car
I found it a real challenge too and only scored the minimum pass mark. I’m an ex police driver, done all my advanced, response courses etc so thought I’d be good at it. I had a similar issue to you in that I clicked too early too often. So I followed similar advice to Pete above. Watch for a hazard, wait a second and then click. Still only just scraped through though
I also struggled to get through the hazard perception test. I have driven buses for 7 years without an accident and also passed my advanced driving test on a motorcycle, however I had to just keep clicking to eventually scrape through the test.
It is no use whatsoever and with the technology available these days I am sure there must be a more realistic way of assessing somebody’s ability to spot and react to hazards.
This problem can happen to anybody. I have been a LGV trainer for over 30 years and last year renewed my DSA Instructor registration. Because it had expired a while ago I had to retake the theory and Hazard Perception tests.
The hazard perception consisted of 14 clips with 1 having a double hazard making a possible total of 75 marks. The pass mark is 57.
I scored 5 on the double hazard
2 clips x 5 marks
7 clips x 4 marks
3 clips x 3 marks
1 clip x 1 mark
Total marks 53 and a FAIL
I then went through all the drivingtheory4all videos and scored 67 on the 2nd attempt.
I failed because I was clicking way too early. In my work I have to look as far ahead as possible and start advising candidates about hazards long before they have even noticed them. Using this same method on the hazard test was my downfall.
The advice given by Pete above is spot on. It works almost every time.
These posts are all so familiar. The h/p test is totally flawed and it is impossible to sync with the minds of the plebs that set the scoring windows. I`d just love to see how they themselves would fare in an independent test. Abysmally is my guess.
Dont be afraid to keep clicking! Better too many than too few. Just dont hammer away on the mouse like you`re sending a telegram! 1 sec between clicks is fine 2 or 3 times in a row - just avoid making it a detectable rhythmic pattern.
I trawled through hundreds of test vids and still only managed 72 on the day.
Its a very effective cash cow for the powers that be, and nothing more. Dont beat yourself up about not cracking it as yet - its simply a ■■■■-poor excuse to milk peoples money, and not rooted in the real world. Your considerable experience & road skill counts for nothing, as it is just a video game that you have to anticipate, and learn how it`s “played”.
Hi Guys, another wannebe truck driver in the making.
Good advice from the other posters.
This was the test that I was most concerned about as you can’t really study for it.
I did mine yesterday and had a good pass. 92 out of a possible 100. 19 video clips with a pass mark of 67. I obviously played their computer game well.
I’d used the DSA practice DVD and been getting average results.
What I did on the test was this;
Every hazard I saw, I clicked the mouse. I then clicked (several times with a pause inbetween) as the hazard was developing and also when it would’ve made me slow down, change course or stop.
The test should be called ‘Hazard Happening’. Its nothing like reality and as mentioned before, most people would see hazards way before they became an issue.
What did make me laugh was that out of the ten candidates, I was the oldest by about 25 years. I’m only 45!
Think I’m gonna dig my Playstation out over Christmas and have a practice on the driving games
As a consolation I passed my theory first time (97% - happy with that) but its annoying I can’t move forward with my training till I get thru the HPT - I was iniatially hoping to be at least to LGV2 by Christmas, no chance now
OK, I’ve been practicing a fair bit and I have noticed one thing which was really throwing me off… I was using the mouse cursor to follow the road and was aiming to click ON the hazard(s).
This is way wrong, get the cursor off the viewing area and just press the button the second you see what you feel is a hazard. My score increased massively once I realised this error.
I still find hazards in these clips which they don’t seem to be interested in but overall my averages are up in the pass area now.
I did my theory test today scored 97/100 well pleased Then went for the hazard perception test 66/100 not so pleased !!!
What i was wondering is do i have to do both test again■■? hoping not!!!
