hi keith,
tdw did run magnum’s,i would say that the tdw artics are now all volvo, man and mercs.tdw are based in bridgend these days, the company saved itself half a million pounds a year in diesel alone by moving from ammanford,to bridgend in order to follow their customers.
regards andrew.

I remember Western Transport from Avonmouth opening a depot nr Carmarthen (Johnstown?) in about '86 (was it an old Dairy Crest site?) They used to pick up Egyption spuds from the docks and take them all over the show - I seem to recall they got short changed by the agent on this job (not uncommon back then, or now!) Some good lads on that job though and were absorbed into the reefer distribution side (was it cheese or butter from Haverfordwest?) I think Westerns dropped an almighty clanger when they moved out of West Wales because them boys were jumping thru hoops to make it work for them (that reminds me, didn’t they also have contract with some ice cream firm Swansea way?) maybe I’ve dreamt that one, I’ve had a few sausage butties since then - be good to see some pics though (I know there’s a Western thread on here but not much on the Welsh side)

Hi hayday, you’re not dreaming…as you say Westerns did the Egyptian spuds, they came into Milford Haven docks and local labour was took on,an Avonmouth driver Bob Hodges was based down there first of all with an FL10 (one of the first lorries in the fleet with a cab phone) and he kept the job going from the cab.Again as you say the lads were good workers and used to handling Pembrokeshire potatoes,Phil John and Mackie Brown were two lads who came to Avonmouth when the job ended.
We regularly collected butter from Dairy Crest at Whitland, which I did on the odd occasion and the ice cream firm you’re thinking of was Windsor Creameries at Kidwelly.Mackies job when he came onto fridges was to go back and forth from Kidwelly to Newport cold store…a boring job as I did it loads of times too…

Cheers Bubbs,

Dodger - there’s a blast from the past Phil John and Mackie yep they were good lads, plus the older Welsh guy Jim (he was a funny bloke I forget his second name) he was always after something for nowt and there was another lad springs to mind, the good looking one who used to sit in his cab and watch tennis (don’t think we’re gonna be seeing him on the likes of Eddie Stobarts trucks and trailers soon) I heard Phil went o/d with Archbolds later on, and I think I saw Mackie doing a bit for Mansel Davies afterwards (I think he’d worked there before) not sure what the other lads are upto now
