Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Yeah looks a nice bit of kit.

This shot today whilst climbing up towards Baverstocks on the notorious A465 beetween Merthyr and Aberdare with a gross weight of 140 TONS.
As I said previously it doesnt matter what is pulling the load the mpg will not vary very much.
This pic with the details are of Graham Hillman with Walters mighty Scania 620.

hi dave just to let u know lynclys is still open but with skeleton staff, last i eared there his only 3 blokes on site and they only sell lime and concrete aggregate.makes u wonder why they bought the place if all they were going to do was run it into the ground, probably to stop anybody else buying it  regards drewster

Hi drewster,
Thought it looked very quiet around there,it’s a shame to see this happening to once thriving places. It’s not as if stone is not needed, the state of the roads, all these quarries should be flat out.
You are quite right about the big boys buying them up to monopolise the job, then closing them. Trouble is the local people and families are suffering because their livelihoods have gone.
Cheers Dave.

Dave the Renegade:

Another Commer, but looked smaller than the Maxiload.

You are probably right R975ENC,drove a Maxiload in the late 60’s,looked bigger than that one,but there was a smaller Commer there, getting confused in my old age   .
Cheers Dave.

Hi another firm my dad worked for .They were called Cooksons form Condover just out side of Shrewsbury. He drove both of them . But the F86 was his baby. Used mostly on stone from Bayston Hill quarry and sugar beet from farms about the area.It was way under powered but my dad used the 8 gears too the full!!

Hi Tony,
Great pics. I remember seeing Cooksons about, where abouts is the F7 tipping, that peice of road looks familiar.
Cheers Dave.

Dave Cookson still works out of Bayston Hill, as an owner driver, with a Volvo 8 Wheeler, reg C003SON. His Dad still comes in occasionally, but often can be seen at Shows with his restored lorries…

Dave the Renegade:
Hi Andy,
The Tarmac and tipper pic’s in the last post were put on by jonmea a Towyn based tipper operator. I have had a few from Bayston Hill,as I travel the A49 and A5 quite a bit. Whats happened to Llynclys Quarry, went by there a few weeks back and it looked as if it was either shut or mothballed.
Cheers Dave.

Llynclys is still open, Tarmac bought it from LaFarge a few years back as you know, they make concrete aggregates and agricultural lime most of the time…

Thanls for the info Andy, here we go with the last few from Gaydon.

Such a shame they stopped making these, this is a super looking ERF.

Last one from Gaydon 2010. Smart Volvo waiting in the carpark to take an old one home.

Nail on the head there. :imp:

I used to go in there on my old job now and again. Two things stand out - the maddest, quickest dumper driver I have EVER seen and leaving a ton of tar on the deck because I thought that the buzzer meant I was loaded, turns out it was to tell me I had one more drop!

Here you are Steve neversweat. Brian Lloyd a long time employee of Burgoynes drove this Spanish Dodge in the 80’s/90’s.
Brians daughter is now 25,so that gives you an idea of the approx year taken. Brian has for several years been a Transport Manager for Burgoynes.

Taken the same time as the previous pic, this load of Bricks was a delivery to Kington Building Supplies Ltd.
Brian comes from a family of lorry drivers, with his late dad Frank and older brother Peter both driving lorries.

Was BCJ 108V a genuine sleeper cab (R38) or a R36 converted?
Any photos of WVJ 653T (a R38)?
