Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave, Ive been thinking about that and I just cant remember,we used to tip in so many places in those days,I have a feeling it could be Christmas Common in Oxon, but I wouldnt put money on it.
regards Andrew.

Precoated chippings by the look of it Andrew.Done plenty of them in my day,bit of lump to get out when you loaded the night before to get out of the body.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave, yep, precoats were a bit of a pain, esp on frosty mornings after loading the night before, but precoats always paid a slightly better rate,so was a prefered load. The best paying job I had on precoats was one Saturday morning when I took a load up to a site in Manchester, when I got there the site foreman told me that he wanted 20 t tipped there, and the other 5t. left on & tipped on another site about 3 miles away, I slipped him a fiver so that I didnt have to, he agreed and sent a four wheeler to deliver it, this ment that I had time to nip back to Condover for a return load of sand to Kington.
When I told Stella on Monday morning that it was supposed to be a split load she paid me an extra £25. for the trouble.
ps. I know where the above photo was taken, and so do you.
regards Andrew.

It’s either Dolyhir or Strinds by the looks of it Andrew, the quarries had changed internally to my day even when those pics were taken, and now there completely different.
Cheers Dave.

and a picture of an older Volvo, before 38t. and a good payload was 20t at 32t gross.
Just looking at the photo, must have been 1979, the C/F was brand new,and I remember that Lister donkey with dread, on a frosty morning it was a cow, towards the end we used to have to use “easy start” the beginging of the end  … went onto PTOs,

Hi Dave, yep you are right, its down at the 6mm plant, down by the pond at the bottom of the quarry, where Bottle loaded, could load the exact weight when he wanted to, but if he didnt … OH BOY. :imp: :imp:

That’s what they call the black hole isn’t it  .

Hi Dave, yep, youve got it, I forgot that name, it was handy to the old weighbridge, but if Bottle was having a bad day you could make several trips up and down to get the weight right, I remember tipping the whole lot off more than once and making Bottle reload it again !!

Only had the one Dave, dad was going to buy another for Rhys to replace a P reg F86 which, although a good little truck, wasnt realy up to the job,but Volvo had bought out the “new” F10,which was to new for him, we quickly thought about a Leyland Marathen !,  but quickly decided on a Scania 111  .

They are all pretty accurate nowadays Andrew, they have got weighers on the loading shovels, also the bridge is a long way from where they load,ii’s a pain if you have to go back for more,or if you are over weight, you can lose a lot of time,it was like that in my day,the Gore was the best in my day,Clem was the loader driver and he liked to get it right. Geoff my next door neighbour over at Strinds/Dolyhir is the best nowadays.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave, the new weighers must be a godsend, we did start to use a pressure gauge fitted into a pipe going into the ram, which surprisingly was fairly accurate (as long as the lorry was on the flat). Does Bottle still work at the quarry, best loader in the old days was Yanto.
regards Andrew.

Hi andrew keep the photos coming i used to love going into bayston hill to load precoats with my dad always knew it would be long trip used to be a pain when cold H &S would have a field day if they saw me at back of trailer aged 12 digging precoats then legging it when they started to move while my dad moved forward everytime i smell precoats now takes me back cheers ian

Here’s another for you Andrew, whose contraption is this  looks like an old skip lorry with a big concrete block on the back, coupled to a stock trailer on a DIY drawbar, couldnt get a pic of the whole thing, because of other vehicles.
Or it could be one of Setton & Durwards old units.

Hi Dave, I know that I know the answer to this, ive delivered to the farm where its kept, and the answer has just come to me, its at Lower Clwyss,Llandrindod wells, & yes it is an ex. Settons unit.
regards Andrew.

Hi Andrew,
To probably class it as an agricultural tractor and run it without a LGV licence, altough there is a tax disc in the screen,it’s a weird looking outfit.
Cheers Dave.

Merc reefer seen on the A487 between Aberaeron and Aberystwyth.

Hi Dave, got it in one, nowonder there are less hauliers around !.
Do you know that this brilliant site should have a warning sign   , im spending far to much time reminscing about the past , also got me thinking about some of the earliest lorries that I remember working around here, these being Woolys of Bucknell and their Scammel Highwaymen tar sprayers,
I once saw a triaxle Highwayman coupled up tp a triaxle steel trailer in Sheffield, had to pinch myself to check that I wasnt dreaming !!
does anybody have any photos of these old marroon and black lorries.
regards Andrew.
