Welsh Border and Mid Wales Hauliers 1950's onwards

Hi Harry yep agree on that, though I think the smartest truck that ive ever drven (to date, old but not finished just yet !) was a Stagetruck Daf on the rock and roll in Europe, those silver grey units and trailers are something else, got a couple of photos somewhere, must put them on.

andrew brick:
heres a question for you Dave, can you remember what lorry we first had in yellow ?, ill give you a clue and name Cliff Price.

Got to be honest Andrew, can’t remember Cliff driving for you,and I know him well, had also forgot just how many artics you had at Milebrook until I saw the pics, Great bunch of pics by the way. Have you got any of Jimmy James and his TK Bedford tipper, spent quite a bit of time working with Jim at Milebrook on the road widening scheme.I had a BMC FFK140 with the 5.7 underslung engine for Brisbanes.
Cheers Dave.

andrew brick:

I remember seeing that 111 when Rhys had it new, looked a big lorry, same with the F88 that Derek drove, big moters in their day, just show how things move on each time the weights increase, trouble is the road network doesn’t get better, should do the amount of revenue they take of hauliers and moterists. I’LL PUT THE SOAPBOX DOWN NOW.
Cheers Dave

andrew brick:

Hi Andrew,
I member the yellow unit, but never saw them on the road,it was usually at a weekend when they were back at base that I remember seeing them.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,re my question regarding the yellow colour scheme, here is the answer,Cliff Price drove the yellow AEC in the background, Jim Fiddlers Bedford is parked by it, circa 1972.

my two yellow Scanias in the early 90`s. the little one was later repainted in the more trad red colour, this was written off by a so called driver ? in Pembridge by going into the back of a council lorry, same driver also wrote off the red F reg FL10, needless to say he didnt stay long afterwords !.

Hi Andrew,
That ■■■■■■ estate in the foreground looks like the one I had,but mine was 1979 XFO112T,used to get petrol off your Dad or your Wife,if I was over that way. That TK of Jim’s went well, also remember you running a D series medium wheelbase Ford tipper, driven by David Duggan.
Cheers Dave.

Here you are Andrew, here’s a job for you while your back is mending, keep an eye on the livestock regs at Knighton market.

andrew brick:

two stroke Commer, driven by John Bevan (sadly now gone to the great trucking ground in the sky).
You knew it was the commer coming by its sound, both uphill and down.
This picture was taken outside the old works factory, dont quite know why dad altered the livery slightly, could have been a mistake by the painters.
Brand new Thornes stock box as well, (king of the stock boxes) loved the look of the wooden stock boxes, but boy were moving the decks heavy.

Hi Andrew,
Those Commers would stick with anything in its day,the Albions like yours wouldn’t keep up with them on the hills, when I drove the one for Clarence,we were hauling to Kidderminster, stone for the inner relief road A456,nothing would catch it going up over Clows Top,and the Mann-Abell boys from the quarries pre Tilcon, were a fast lot in their Albions.
I’ve often asked Clarence why he never bought another,he doesn’t know, probably for tipper work they tared in a bit on the heavy side.
Cheers Dave.

Another repeat.KTH Renault badged Dodge parked at the Stanner yard,Radnorshire.

Volvo artic with a bulk tipping trailer coming through the lights on the A44/470,near Bryn Titli wind farm west of Rhayader, Radnorshire.

Two Massey Combines from Kilmarnock going to ■■? well they defo were not going to your part of the world ( too wet and the fields arn’t big enough!) the cutter tables were on another trailer somewhere else. We carried them sub-contract for our friends from Alston J.H.Henderson & Sons . Date — about 72/73 I would say ! Cheers Dennis.

Here’s one that Andrew Brick should know. Scania timber wagon seen on the A4113 at Milebrook, near Knighton, Radnorshire.

Dennis old mate, you are quite wrong about Combines in this area, there is crn grown all around here, even the feild in front of my Bungalow has winter corn on it,we are right on the Hereford border here, grade one arable land, also bigger combines than what you have on your trailer. When I get a chance I will get a pic of the combine thats parked in the barn that I can see at the farm opposite here, its about the same size as those on your trailer, but there are bigger close to here.
By the way,did you forget,I told you I humped bales of hay and straw years ago, that’s the trouble, memory going. :unamused:
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave, well I should know it shouldt I, tell you what spring has sprung by the look of those hedges and trees,Rocket Ron Bywater did a good job laying those hedges.

Hi Andrew,
I didn’t work on that phase of widening, but did on the first phase from Stanage back entrance through to the Stowe turn.
Ted Duggan was the foreman, they could do with someone like him to sort the roads out now,it wasn’t a bad job on that, quite a bit of the time I was hauling stone from the Gore to there, then have a spell hauling from the traxcavator.
Cheers Dave.

Here’s me thinking they still cut corn down your way with a scythe !!! Anyway how do you think one of these crawlers would have pulled you and your spreader up some of them “Wall of death hills” when you were on the lime ! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dave, yes i remember it well, also remember pinching old Jack francis`s best peas  ,lovley old blacksmith forge on the side of the old road. Also remember when comming up the Milebrook pitch was steep enough to slow a lorry, drivers would not beleive it these days.
I think that there was a picture of Jacks old cottage in in the Mid Wales not long ago, prob one of Roger Brights.
One of my driving jobs on the road was driving Jims TK, doing Presteigne bypass,it was a nice job and the sun always seemed to be shining !.
different to Leominster bypass years later when it always seemed to be p…ing down!.surprising what sticks in the mind.
cheers Andrew.

I was involved at the prelude to Presteigne bypass when they knocked Broadaxe railway Bridge down to make way for the bypass, the quarries were quiet,so there were ten lorries hauling stone rubble and all sorts from Presteigne to Cwmwhitton to fill the hollow in,we were supposed to go up round Castle Road in Presteigne and come back down the main street, but as there was usually a bit of skirt abut,us younger drivers used to go up and down the main steet ( two way then ) every so often Ivor Bennett the Police Sargeant would stop us and say boys,go round Castle Road keep the town from getting jammed up,we did it for a few loads, then back to the old way.
Cheers Dave.
