d ave they striked today at machen quarry could not get tarmac delivered messed my day up but iagree with them i dont know if this is true but a driver said offered 1 pence a mile rise robbin [zb] regards rowly good luck all tipper boys
Rumour has it that one of the big quarry owners has started buying some of their own tippers,as they can’t get many to haul for them Rowly. They may need to purchase some more unless they up the rates by quite a bit.
Cheers Dave.
The stupid idiots running the big quarries are to blame. Muppets who wouldn’t know a wagon from on old tin bath and who only look at the short term. I’ll give an example.
I had a customer, the boss and 3 lads, nothing massive but he provided me with good, local work and always paid immediately. I’d carried a bit of stone here and there and mainly just did muckshifting for him. He wanted some tar for a job he had. He asked me for a price on the haulage and waiting time. I gave him a competetive quote and even said I’d help him on the barrow. He booked me for the Saturday morning, this was the Wednesday. He rang me back on Thursday morning saying sorry but he’d have to get it delivered because the quarry were going to deliver it cheaper. I asked how much and he said they were doing it for nothing. The price delivered was the same price collected! How can I compete with that ffs ?
Its the same this way. They are not only underpaying hauliers they are preventing them from subsidising their earnings by doing ex quarry as in your case.

You’re right there Dave; A bloke nearby has one almost identical (Sed Atki) and he does a lot of bag deliveries as we don’t have one.
Missed your post earlier Nathan. There are three scrapyards in Hereford and the amount of scrap that are going into those at the moment is incredible.
Cheers Dave.
Hammer, I was running some waste sand into our soft sand pit a couple of weeks ago when a local builder asked how much for 7t of ballast collected 1t at a time: I told him to ring for a delivery quote and it was cheaper ffs! I delivered the ballast to him and I got a drink (or 2) from him. Good news for me but not good for blokes like you.
We were 1 of the few Hanson quarries on radial miles and a couple of weeks ago we went on to road miles, I knew we would gain on some and lose on others but mostly its a loss, they then gave us 3% which hasn’t got us back to where we were before.
The problem is the managers and directors have been informed of it but are either too dull or ignorant to do anything about it.
Hammer we had this all the time now I order the delivery off the aggregate firm and tell em its going on my truck, they dont like it but when 20t of black is well over £1k I reckon the customer calls the tune eh.

Seeing that reminds me of an old Daf 2500 with boulder body that appeared for a short time around Oxford a few years ago when the John Radcliffe Hospital was being extended. It was on muckshifting and the machine drivers put the same amount of muck on it as the others…most fell off around the roundabouts

I forgot to add, the customer hasn’t come back. Which is understandable but very annoying

IMO, its a deliberate move to stop independant hauliers from making a living any other way apart from pulling for the quarry independantly or having a ‘contract’ truck. It helps them have control I suppose.

Aren’t you on an escalator? Tar*ac gave us an escalator, linked to the price they charge the ‘contracts’ for fuel so if the price goes up, so does the rate. The base rate needs to be about 5% higher but thats another story.

I’ve done this only once and they really didn’t like it. TBH, i don’t bother much with supplying materials anymore. Not worth the hassle. and difficult to get much of a return when the big quarries will undercut you or just do it for nothing.
As I said to Muckaway, its all about control. Stopping the small haulier making his own business so everyone ties themself to the quarry and so they keep control of everyone. Years ago I worked out that the quarry work is my bread and butter and the little bits for myself is the jam to go on it. There ain’t much bread these days, never mind butter and jam!
Hammer ,Going back to the days of Contract ,licenses ,u remember enstons from up the coast ,RMC T/MAC ,JUST a few but they had a tight grip over you ,Cheers Barry Waddy
