One of C M Philpotts Renaults pictured in the yard at Kington, these came after I drove for him.
This should be on Marcs thread, but Ive posted it here, because of the quarry conection.
Pictured in this mag from 1966 is one of Knills, Dodge ■■■■■■■ V8 artics. Knills were based at Crossgates near Llandrindod Wells.
I wish that I had a quid for every Foden Dumper spring that I’ve changed Dave, usually on overtime as the drivers ALWAYS made them last until knockoff time !
BTW, the ones in the advert carrying rock salt were based below ground in the mine at Winsford, they were taken down in pieces and re assembled by Foden mechanics. When due for replacement they were taken apart again, brought to the surface and re assembled before being sold, they had no cab roofs either.
Good pics on a very interesting thread.
Pete.

Hi Pete,
Only found the page with the Dumpers inside the artiicle with the pic of Knills Dodge, thought it might be of interest to some of you with Quarry background.
Cheers Dave.

Hi John,
He had three of them new, probably from Gloucester. I will ask Andrew Stokes who lent me the pic and drove one, where Charlie had them from. A lot of lorries up this way came from all over,as there are no local commercial dealers.
Cheers Dave.
Gwynne Bowen ran from Gorseinon near Swansea. He had a smart fleet of lorries, with some drivers from this area. Not sure where this pic of a Thornycroft eight legger was taken.

That’s more like it Dave,my era .I remember Gwynne Bowen running about.I used to deliver to 3Ms at Gorseinon which was near their depot. They had a depot in Warrington as well I think.
That’s the first time I’ve seen them with a Thorneycroft and the location looks very “Cotswoldy”
Hi Chris,
Tony Lewis gave the pic to Andrew Stokes, there are a lot of thatched cottages in Herefordshire. I will ask one of them. They always looked smart with a nice livery.
Cheers Dave.

If you’ve any more pics of the old South Wales hauliers Dave I’d like to see them.I knew somebody who drove for either Illtyd Thomas or Philip Jones from Fforestfach,I can never remember which one but never seen any pics of them.
I can’t even remember the bloke’s name now.

Can’t promise anything on that one Chris. I will ask around,it was only by chance I found out that Andrew had these,he may know of some,as he drove for Blue Line back in the sixties.
Cheers Dave.
Thanks Dave.Blue Line were from Tonddu,Bridgend and did a lot for British Tissues. They merged with Cardiff Transport to make Carline who had a yard in Sheffield.
I’ve got the spelling right then? Tonddu,Fforestfach and Illtyd Thomas?

Chris, you are asking the wrong person about Welsh spelling ,only live one mile inside the border here. Where were Illtyd Thomas based ?
Cheers Dave.
They were from Swansea Dave but not sure where exactly.Other Swansea hauliers,Entress, were from Llansamlet and W.G.Davies were from Morriston or Landore.

Yes remember the other two well, been by their yards before the M4 was completed. A mate of mine moved from here to Swansea to drive for Entress,in later years he drove for someone else, who ran ERF’s,it could have been Thomas’s.
Cheers DAVE.
One of Sharples Foden artics, pictured in their yard at Eardisley.
Another picture of Sharples, F reg eight wheeler Foden tipper.
Nice ERF six wheeler with a difference, belonging to Rutland Electric Fencing, seen at Letton by the A438.
