The Gore Quarry in 1964. Bill Jones loading a new Dodge Kew under the Parker tarmac plant. The Quarry was then owned by The Old Radnor Trading Company Ltd,it was bought by Mann-Abell shortly after. Bill Jones continued driving for Mann-Abell,then Tilcon when they bought the Quarry. Bill retired in the eighties, finishing on a Foden eight wheeler.
Hi Dave
Great pic’s again mate, good to see the quarries in the old days before I ever saw them. Just got this picture in my mind of you tyring to get Norman to let go of the photos
and Norman telling you he needed a deposit that was only returnable if the photos came back in the same condition as you had them.

Hi John,
To be fair,Norman was very good,he said he had some Mann -Abell and Tilcon magazines with pictures in,it was when I called to pick them up from his place he produced the pics. Ive uploaded about three more to post, then I will see what is in the mags.He is going to have a look on here,he is like the rest of us,sad to see what is happening to these quarries lately. They are now since september being managed from Bristol, just given their own four lorry drivers redundancy notices. Its not looking to healthy for any of the hauliers,as there is talk of a cull of lorries. I have lent Norman an album of pics which he was interested in,so he may dig some more out. I have about five people who are going to dig some old one’s out. I will just have to wait until they do.
Cheers Dave.
Picture of the Gore Quarry weighbridge in the late 1990’s. About to go on the bridge is W T Skyrme’s Volvo FL10 artic tipper. Skyrmes were based at Three Gates garage, Tedstone Wafre near Bromyard, they sold up in 2002. Two of C W Griffiths, Foden six wheelers in Nash Rocks colours are also in the pic.

hI ianto,
You are right, it was Dolyhir, they didn’t have so much a builders merchant, they sold cement and pipes. Before Nash Rocks bought the quarry off Mann-Abell in the seventies, who ran it for about 8 years,it belonged to the Old Radnor Trading Company Ltd,who as well as owning Dolyhir and Gore quarries, had a concrete block yard right by the Dolyhir Railway Station, hence the raised platform used for loading etc. They made precast concrete products there including pipes, lintels and animal drinking troughs, also many other things. They still dealt in a certain amount of stuff into the eighties. Since 1985 Nash Rocks who bought Dolyhir have resumed the block production and also beams, which they still make at tthe Strinds, next door to Dolyhir. Tarmac as you know, now run the lot, blocks are now made at Moreton on Lugg, near Hereford, where they also have a railway siding, where thousands of tons of quarry materials are moved from, all coming from these local quarries. The pic below is about fifty yards below where you unloaded the pipes.
Cheers Dave.
This Quarry is having a hard time. Ennstone’s Leinthall Earles quarry near Wigmore in Herefordshire.

Hi Steve,
Its a Daf cf artic with the cab tilted. It has a load of tractors on the trailer and is parked near a dealers depot.
Cheers Dave.
Saw this Scania artic, with a good of straw,on the A483 between Oswestry and Wrexham.
A nice bulk tipper of J C Evans, parked next to a smart Scania,at the Lazy Kettle Truckstop.
Reg Baker in one of the Gore Quarry loading shovels, clearing snow in Febuary 1977. The quarries very often hired the loading shovels out to the council in those days,if there was heavy snow. Here he is clearing snow in the quarry.

Didn’t like to split this pic,as it belongs to Norman Evans.
In the foregrond is one of C W Griffiths Fodes, not sure who the driver with the eight wheeler is,the pic is taken by the workshop at the Gore Quarry. It looks like John Williams.
