Do you (or Ivor) have access to any old pics of the aforementioned Foden S36 ?
I never knew that Tarmac contractors could use Tarmac’s khaki colour scheme and have their name on the door - unless they had the old Tarmac logo and lettering present as well.
Either way, would be good to see any old pics Ivor has.

Hi Bonkey,
Don’t know Ivor Owen, think he is no longer around, think his family run the business. They are in North Wales, not my neck of the woods. Tarmac never had any quarries this way in the days of the khaki colours. They have only run under that banner this way after Anglo American bought out these quarries, along with the rest 15 to 20 years ago.
Hammer would know more about Ivor Owen I would think.
Cheers Dave.
Hi boys
My father worked out of Minera quarry late sixties The quarry belong to Adam Lythgo who sold it to Tarmac mid sixties. The trucks were all subbies in their own colours, encluding a short man from out of the vilage called Ivor Owen. After father was pushed of the road one morning Ivor and his wife took him in and give him breckfast then brought him food and tea all day as they recoverd his truck. He was a much loved and well respected man. He had a large familly and set the lads up with there own trucks, some are still running today trading as Ivor Owen and sons.I cannot remember the Foden as it would have been after father finnished there. As that is a Painting is it posible that the lettering has been added… When father first went in the quarry the only thing that Tarmacs insisted was that he had a new truck so he brought a Guy big J 4 wheeler. He did the odd day out of Tarmacs Craig lello quarry Corwen and I don’t remember seeing any trucks in Tarnacs colours there either.
Hi Keith,
I remember a lot of hauliers and contractors spreading lime under the Adam Lythgo name down this way. I had forgot about them, until I read your post, they were about in the fifties and possibly early sixties this way. Don’t know where they were getting the lime from, unless it was from the local quarries and Adam Lythgo was the agent. I will ask Clarence Griffiths who is older than me.
Cheers Dave.
Some of the local lorries parked at the Strinds Quarry. The Volvo eight wheeler on the left as you look at the pic, belongs to owner driver David Gwynne from Kington.
My next door neighbour and old school mate Geoff Lewis drives this Loading Shovel at Strinds/Dolyhir Quarries,we tried to get him in this pic as he was getting out at the end of his 12 hour shift, but Geoff all 6’3" of him ducked behind the door.He has completed over 45 years in these quarries, as a fitter and a Loading Shovel driver in later years.
Another owner driver who I was CPC holder for when he started. Benson Davies. Benson operates his six wheeler out of Strinds/Dolyhir Quarries, seen here parked at Strinds.

I’m not particularly well up on Ivor Owens. They operate a couple of 4x2’s for definite. I would estimate theyve got about 6-10 truck in total.
A couple more of the Dumpers, the Cat 770 was fitted with a body that was to small, hence the greedy boards,so my mate Geoff informs me. This one also hauls from the face to the crusher.
