that must be in the days before health and safety. If you stood up there now without hi viz jacket and trousers and hard hat you would be banned from tarmac sites.

Hi jonmea,
You are absolutely right, this quarry, the Strinds is now run by Tarmac,at the time of this pic, early eighties.it was still owned by Nash Rocks. Kevin Layton has since been tango’d, the whole quarry is full of do’s don’t’s and notices, you can’t get out of the lorry at the Gore quarry at the weighbridge, if you are 100 kilo’s over you have to go and take it off, before if you jumped out of the cab, problem solved. Health and safety, good thing, up to a point, but gone totally over the top.
Cheers Dave.

A important part of the lorry fraternity, the Coucil lorry Driver’s, many have been up the road on artics etc, before getting a steady job like this. Also do an important job when there is winter weather about. Amey do the road contract in Herefordshire, this lorry being loaded on the A44,Tack Barn, Kington.

Hi both,
I worked with Colin when we were both at Benson’s. Anybody know what has happened to Gary (short bloke) who drove the ERF E10 artic for Benson’s? First lorry I drove after passing my test!

Do you mean Gary Proudman? If you do he retired a couple of years ago and i think he spends a lot of his time at his caravan now.
Yes, I think so, nice bloke, pleased to hear he is well. What was the name of the transport firm from Bucknell that went under around 1989 / 1990, he was using the ERF at the time and the receivers tried to seize her.
I still laugh telling my lads about going to Southam on my first ever drive in the ERF. Eaton twin split (pre-select) box, and no-one told me how they worked. I bet there were a few folk cursed me on the way there that morning when I had to keep coming to a stop to start off again . Plucked up courage to ask at a butty wagon and from then on she flew
6 months later they closed the agricultural division and I moved onto pastures new.

Hi Ploughman,
The firm from Bucknell was probably Tommy Edwards, had red lorries and did haulage for McConnells or Bensons. Atki Dave, probably knows more about it than me.
Cheers Dave.

Hi jonmea,
That would be about the time that this young driver started at the Gore on his own, a lot of the second hand lorries, that haul out of these quarries are sourced from within the Tarmac owned quarries. I haven’t got pics of all the lorries yet, there might be a few more yo recognise.
Cheers Dave.
